Where to go with a me and a 3 year old, thinking of a cottage?

Limited income, for my own reasons want to go away with me and DS for about 3 nights, somewhere countryish but with maybe local pub/shops etc but fairly isolated.
Quite happy just to kick a ball about for a few days, needs to be near transport links.

national trust have some nice affordable cottages , have you tried them?

If you can possibly afford it, I would go for a bed and breakfast type place. Bliss not to have to do ANY sort of domestic stuff for the weekend!
