Vienna/Salzburg - tips please

We've never been to Austria, but have always wanted to, after many years of repeatedly watching the Sound Of Music 🙈

We're aiming to be there for a week in the summer, spending a few nights in each city. Any tips for tried and tested places to eat/museums/wine bars etc?
And is it hugely expensive to eat out, ie would an apartment be better than a hotel so we can bring takeaways back etc?
Any tips would be so welcome.

I know this is an old ish thread, but I'm going to Vienna for four days in July. Anyone able to tell me how much pocket money to take. I'm not a big drinker, but I like food! Breakfast is in the hotel. Any idea how much stuff costs?

The general price level is about the same as in London, as long as you stay away from the tourist traps. You can get a good meal for under £20, but can easily spend £80 if that's your thing. What "stuff" are you thinking of buying?

Although almost all places accept cards, be aware that smaller cafes and payments for small amounts are often cash only.

Cash is king in Vienna and Austria generally.

Shame you're having breakfast at the hotel. We loved stepping out and discovering cafes for breakfast. Shame I can't remember many of their names! Can you cancel that element of your deal?

This place had a students vibe and great strudel www.kaffeealtwien.at/

But there are loads of great cafes. Love Vienna!

Thanks both, yeah, there's nothing stopping us from not having breakfast at the hotel.
I'm planning on taking cas, because my bank charges me for every card transaction!

For wine, go to the Naschmarkt in Vienna. There are lots of little wine stands with wine from all across the country. There's a good choice of food too.

I'm bumping the thread so I don't lose it!
