We are going to the Amalfi coast in Easter but don’t know where to base ourselves; will be grateful for advice. We normally do self catering and rent a car; but not sure reg car this time as I read is not easy to drive and find parking. We want to explore the area.

For logistical reasons, I’d suggest you stay in Sorrento. From Sorrento you can hop on a ferry to Capri, catch the Circum Vesuviana to see Pompeii, or take the bus to Positano (or any other town). All of the little towns are well connected by the SITA bus.
And since Sorrento is connected to Naples via train and ferry, it’s easy to get to and from with luggage. A more budget-friendly option is Salerno, which is also well-connected by train. It’s also the best option if you want to explore the smaller more southern towns like Ravello, Minori and Vietri.
The road (there’s only one that goes around the coast) is so narrow in many places there’s just enough space for a single vehicle to pass. And it’s busy. It’s also made worse by the frequent public buses that hurtle up and down the road all day and they always take right of way!
Busses are definitely the way to travel. They’re regular, cheap, clean and the views are outstanding. However, they’re busy – to the point where you may be waiting a long time for one that’ll stop.

I'm thinking of the same trip & am considering Sorrento or St Agnello (1 train stop away).

The only thing that puts me off is the weather at that time of year & I'm debating whether to go in the summer instead.
