Mykonos? South Italy? Or other suggestions

I want to book a 1 week holiday somewhere in the summer holidays. It will be with my DH and DD age 5. It will be our first holiday in school holidays so I'm still adapting to the price difference!!

I had my heart set on Tuscany originally but found the flights awkward so moved onto South Italy - Puglia (specifically Monopoli/Polignano a Mare). It was described as almost undiscovered, but on further investigation it looks overcrowded which put me off. I also found the hotels to be extremely expensive (we like modern 4/5 star hotels)

I've now had this idea of going to Mykonos but starting to worry it is a party island?? Is this true or are there parts we can go to which will be quieter. And might it be just too hot for a 5 year old? Feel a bit lost!

I live in Puglia. Monopoli and the area around it, Polignano etc are very touristy in summer. Polignano in particular is rammed. We last went in 2020 when there were still travel restrictions and it was heaving. (Italians mainly, though quite a few Germans and Brits) They're the first places Puglian parents let their teenage kids go on holiday alone to. Lots of nightclubs (open air near the beaches) There are "villaggi" hotels (hotel complexes) which would be what you're after, but not cheap.
The Gargano area (Northern Puglia, knobbly bit sticking out) is much nicer imo. Vieste, Peschici.

BTW, in July and August temperatures can be over 40 with a fuckton of humidity. In 28 years I've only spent 2 summers here (20/21) and wouldn't recommend it. May and June are great though.

What’s led you to Mykonos?!

vitahelp · 07/01/2023 19:25

@Geamhradh Thank you for the info, it confirms what I already suspected. Although I had no idea it was popular with teenagers and had nightclubs etc too! And I hadn’t realised quite how hot it got. I’ll count it out for now, maybe one for the future.

@countdowntonap Haha it did sound a bit random! It’s actually because I was invited to a wedding there a few years back but couldn’t make it due to being away somewhere else the same week. The photos looked lovely and I’ve always thought I’d try and go there at some stage. Have you been?

Mykonos is amazing but bit of a weird choice with a 5yo in tow - it is very busy and a big party town, though there are quieter resorts. There are better Greek islands for your purposes I should think - Naxos, Crete, Corfu would probably be more suitable.

I would say for children somewhere in the Canary Islands may be more suitable ?? Tuscany and Mykonos are lovely bit more adult holidays I would xx

Menorca fits your bill. Family friendly but not chaotic. Lovely beaches and nice little towns too.

vitahelp · 08/01/2023 12:36

@Hoolihan Ah ok that’s good to know, I’ll give that a miss then! I’ve been to Crete before but back when I was younger so it was Malia !! But I know there are more family orientated parts of the island. I’ll have a look at Naxos and Corfu.

@sunseaandme Ill have a look at the Canaries. I’ve been to Tenerife & Lanzarote but over a decade ago so don’t feel like I know what I’m doing!

@PAFMO Thank you for the recommendation, I’ve not been there before so will have a look!

Mallorca - Porto di Pollenca worked very well for us when kids were younger/that age.

Monopoli is sooo gorgeous but will be busy in main summer and very hot.

Can you go in May half term? Cooler weather and less crowded.
