Silk Route by rail

Has anyone done part or all of this journey and would like to share their experiences, good and bad?

I've always fancied doing a big journey by train and would consider other ideas (across South Africa, Canada or Australia...)

I would have around 3 or 4 weeks and like to travel in relative comfort!

You may already know this, but do have a look at www.seat61.com for all things rail-related. It's an amazing resource.

Do you mean the Silk Road?

It would be challenging to do much of the route consistently via train - even in China the routes are not particularly good. It’s also not a good time to travel in China.

Nonetheless, a route from Xi’an to Lanzhou, Xining. Qinghai lake and onto Dunhuang would be absolutely fabulous with lots to explore along the way. Dunhuang is on my bucket list.

Have you watched series 1 of Race Across the World? I recall one of the teams followed the Silk Road for part of their journey albeit travelling as cheaply as possible. It may provide some inspiration or ideas. I loved the programme and love the idea of such a trip but probably lack the courage to do it!

Central Asia is amazing but not sure I'd do a long rail trip there at the moment, lots of different problems going on

I've heard the rail trip across Canada is amazing, especially as you go through the Rockies

Canada sounds amazing.
And sounds a safer bet than Asia...for the time being anyway.
