Looking at Italy over Christmas, however flights have not been released and was wondering what kind of increase to expect on usual flight cost if anyone could advise please? I was looking to go around 23rd December.

The 23rd is often the worst day to travel because you have all the people who live away from their families going ‘home’, plus all those like you going away on holiday. It depends a bit on what day of the week it is (if 23 is a Sunday more people would fly on the 22, for example) but it’s always going to be both expensive and horribly overcrowded. In the past I’ve had to look as early as the 18th to find a decent price. The alternative is you find out the exact time and day the flights are released and try to get the first few at a good price - but lots of others will be doing the same thing. Or you accept an awkward flight time or transfer details in exchange for it being cheaper. The budget airlines love 6am flights!

A few years ago I flew back to the UK on the 16th, then home to my resident country on the 23rd, a popular tourist destination. The 23rd flight was 4 times as much as the week before.

Wow thanks both, seems like it'll probably be out of the question. I knew it'd be more but 4x more is crazy!

Would you say it's comparable to the summer holidays, or even more?
