Fly Drive holiday with teens and older kids. Advice and routes needed

We're looking at booking a once in a lifetime trip in August, restricted to August and the heat. Looking at doing a tour from San Francisco to New York. Help, experiences and suggestions would be really helpful. Looking at two weeks touring West to East then a few days in New York. TIA x

For two weeks I would suggest sticking to the west coast driving, if you aren't into the heat fly into San Francisco and take a trip through the giant redwoods and Oregon coast before heading inland to crater lake and if you fancy kitch, Reno, Tahoe to back to sf. Fly back to New York for 3 nights in New York. When I did a similar itinerary I got reasonable flights via Newark, breaking on the return leg.
