Your favourite holiday in recent years

What has been your favourite family holiday in recent years? Either in UK or nearby Europe.

(I don't want to know about holidays when you stayed at home. I'm looking for inspiration.)

And why was it your favourite holiday? (Because if it was because your dp proposed to you I won;t be able to recreate that.)

Arran is v nice
We have spent an excellent week at Skipness on the other side from Arran.....there is a fantastic place to eat about 30 mins drive from skipness called the Kilberry Inn here

Excellent B and B doing terrific b'fasts

here on the edge of the Rothiemerchus estate the best smoked salmon with organic free range scrambled eggs I have ever eaten.

Love St Andrews.

Edinburgh, what do I need to say about that?

Blandmum · 02/02/2008 19:58

Can't camp atm because dh needs a proper bed, with a bathroom close at hand.

pointydog · 02/02/2008 20:16

I am also drawn to northumberland once more. Only spent weekends there.

Thingsis, I sort of want busy, people, beaches, hang out places, fun for the dds plus remote, beauty, activities for us.

I am enjoying your suggestions - holiday searching is fun

We've stayed at The Bell Inn in Skenfrith a couple of times and it was excellent.

Good food, spacious and pretty rooms, lots to see/do/walk about, beautiful countryside, clean air... In fact I wanna go back right now!

AdamAnt · 02/02/2008 20:21

this estate has cottages to rent at skipness

They also run the seafood cabin.

This is emphatically not the luxury hoiday cottage, but we were right next to the castle, and the view from our window was of the sea and arran in the bay.

Three beaches near the cottage, one all of shells, one sandy and one all of pebbles. Lovely walks in the estate.

Seafood cabin first rate. Tiny shop in the village that will get your shopping in for you when you arrive. Very famous five. Some of the cottage s also have dingies.

Just don't tell anyone else, OK???

Blandmum · 02/02/2008 20:23

skipness estate

pointydog · 02/02/2008 20:23

Moondog and Carmenere - we go near to you also. Love it there - it's gorgeous. Rained all the bloody time last year tho.'

bozza · 02/02/2008 20:25

We had a lovely holiday last year in the Gard area of the south of France. We stayed in a small villa (townhouse type thing) at Aigues- Mortes (mediaeval walled town), the house was modern with access to a shared pool, but walking distance (for a 3yo) into the pedestrianised walled area with lots of restaurants etc. 5 mins drive to several sandy beaches with calm, shallow sea. Also lots to do in region - Montpellier, Nimes, Arles, Camargue, Pont du Gard etc.

pointydog · 02/02/2008 20:30

Villa in Tuscany, just outside Florence. We went in June so not too hot.

Bink · 02/02/2008 20:38

pointydog - weren't we talking about Paris recently? Our few days there in October was our standout success recently - it was just great.

Just over a year ago we had a skiing idyll (if that's not contradiction) in Switzerland, that was glorious - snow just good enough, but it was ambience & the company. We're planning to go back to same hotel for this May halfterm, for walking & wind & flowers. Can't wait.

moondog · 02/02/2008 20:42

Fuck it.Just lost a whole load of stuff. Aaargh!!

Beddgelert-lovely pubs and strolling

Porthmadog-collect cockles and mussels on Borth y Gest beach. L:unch at Portmeirion and stroll afterwards.

Cricieth-gorgeous seaside town. Ice cream at Cadwaladers and dinner at BYO fish restaurant opposite.Cup of tea in lovely but shabby (adds to the charm) Art Deco cafe on the prom-even has tolerable soft play.

Nant Gwrtheyrn near Nefyn. Welsh Language centre. Lovely wild walks.

Beach at Morfa nefyn

National Trust property Plas yn Rhiw in Rhiw and beach below it (Porth Neigwl)

Aberdaron and day trip (or longer) to Ynys Enlli.(Unbeleiavably peaceful)

Fres crabs (best eer) for about £4 each from Selective Seafoods in llangwnadl.

Just driving and meandering.

pointydog · 02/02/2008 21:07

yes, bink. Was thinking of doing Paris at easter but would work out a bit pricey. We are going to an old Scottish haunt instead. But will def do 4/5 days in Paris and will prob use your appt site, but might need to wait another year or two.

pointydog · 02/02/2008 21:10

thanks, moon. does sound good. A contender.

We've done st andrews too, clueless.

Budget wise, want under £1000 for 10 days or so. So realistica;;y couldn't get further than north france, lowlands
