Your favourite holiday in recent years

What has been your favourite family holiday in recent years? Either in UK or nearby Europe.

(I don't want to know about holidays when you stayed at home. I'm looking for inspiration.)

And why was it your favourite holiday? (Because if it was because your dp proposed to you I won;t be able to recreate that.)

MD - castle is fab, walks on beach, Whitby Abbey, York an hour away, fish and chips !

moondog · 02/02/2008 17:04

Isn't there an Alan Ayckborn theatre there too?
And a fantastic Art Deco hotel that is being renovated?
Or am I gettting confused?

pointydog · 02/02/2008 17:05

what? scarborough?

Well, we were in the environs. Just near Cayton Bay. One of those big converted farms that was about eight stone cottages, in t'cuntry. Small indoor pool and games room with pool table and ping pong table.

We did the traditional donkeys on teh beach, sandcastles, ice creams, kids buying tat in souvenir shops, meals in jolly Italian restaurants. We found a quiet beach formost of beach trips. Shire horse centre (twas a bit odd), day in York, Robin Hood bay, Flamingoland (dds fave natch). A packed week. I quite like traditional British beach places.

Actually I love the authentic British seaside experience.
A million times better than some shit Med style pastiche.

unknownrebelbang · 02/02/2008 17:11

A holiday is what you make it, isn't it?

Doesn't really matter where (as long as it's clean).

dropscone · 02/02/2008 17:12

I agree - althought there is a fine line between kitchy seaside (Scab) and the hell that is Paignton - great zoo though !

JossStick · 02/02/2008 17:31

Fantastic holiday last year - Loch Ness! We had 2 small boys but we loved it & plenty to do within driving distance.

If you're looking for something a bit more like Scarborough - Llandudno / Conwy and the North Welsh Coast is a firm fave with us.

pointydog · 02/02/2008 18:01

loch ness - really?

I've never thought of loch ness, maybe I should.

I've been looking up cornwall but the tourism sites are rubbish. I keep coming across the BIG Sheep attraction. 10 breeds of sheep strut their stuff on stage. What sort of warped tourist attraction is that?

Is there anything more to cornwall than beaches and sheep?

It was wonderful

pigleto · 02/02/2008 18:53

We love the Isle of Man. Laxey beach is the best beach in the world and ds has a steam train habit so he is in heaven there. They have fairies too you know.

pigleto · 02/02/2008 18:55

And I love the Lleyn peninsula too. Absolute heaven. I am very moondog.

wilbur · 02/02/2008 18:59

Best holiday in recent years was last summer - 2 weeks at a gite near La Rochelle in France. Nice pool, good accommodation (although double bed was a bit saggy and short for dh) and plenty for kids to do and nice things nearby. A bit far inland if you're mad on beaches though.

And we always have a wonderful time in Aberdovey, Wales. Great town beach, truly awesome empty beach a tiny bit up from town, tons to do locally rain or shine. And a couple fo good restaurants and pubs for grown up time.

Blandmum · 02/02/2008 18:59

'The High Road'

that was the prog.

Take moondogs advive re That part of N wales, she helped to make a hloiday that we had there extra special. She knows her onions, that moondog!

Fab holiday there.

What are the must-see places and must-do things in the llyn penin, moony?

pointydog · 02/02/2008 19:16

oh yes, lots of people are drawn to a hol in scotland, the weather is pants and they never go back again. I wouldn't have picked Ayr, though

marina · 02/02/2008 19:17

Ile d'Oleron is about half way down near la Rochelle. So, a bit of a drive, but budget airlines fly to La Rochelle airport so you can hire a car

hercules1 · 02/02/2008 19:18

MB did you go camping when doing your month tour? Did you stick to basic campites or go for more butliny type places?
