Ideas for extension to New York trip

We are thinking of going to New York in August (I know might be hot but is our only chance to go really) and thinking of spending a week in the city then renting a car and heading out somewhere else like a national park or somewhere scenic and maybe renting a cabin and doing some hiking/sightseeing. Can anyone recommend anywhere?

Train to Toronto/ niagara falls?
The falls werent as big as I thought. Good extension for us though.

Thank you @Rummikub, good idea. Also has anyone been to Cape Cod? Is that worth a trip? Or is it very expensive? (Our budget is probably on the low side compared to most people)...

What about upstate New York - the Hudson Valley is scenic and there are the Catskills and the Adirondacks. Lots of reasonably priced rental properties.
Cape Cod is lovely but it is expensive in high summer.

Catskills! We used to go to a town called Hunter it's lovely.

The Finger Lakes are lovely and it's New York States' wine country. Lots of lovely towns and wine producers!

Yes. We have been to Cape Cod. It’s great for beaches and is pretty laid back. We stayed at Sandwich and then moved on to Chatham. Most places are lovely though.

Regarding plans: I would spend less time in NY. A couple of nights earlier I would get the train to Boston and have a look at Boston. Whale watching is good and so are museums. Then I would hire the car and drive to Cape Cod. In the busy season, if takes a while! Or go up the coast from Boston. It’s a very good add on to NY.

Or: explore NY state. The Hudson River is attractive and maybe go to the Catskills. NY state has a lot to offer. Niagara is not great in my view. The relaxation is better elsewhere!

Get a short hopper flight from La Guardia up to Portland, Maine. Base yourself in a place like Ogunquit and do day trips out and about - to the Kennebunks, the National Parks, explore the coast a bit - or just flop on the beach.

We had an absolutely fabulous week there and it’s not really on the radar for Brits. Wide choice of accommodation too if you are being mindful of the £s. Be aware though that EVERYTHING is now ridiculously expensive in the U.K. I would definitely try and get self catering accommodation if you are on a tight budget.

We go to Boston, not NY but it would work as well.
Current plan: couple of days Boston and area then flight to Montreal and road trip to Quebec City and then back.
Depending on budget we may go back to NY for another two days but that's not 100% secure and depends on flight times.

Why not do East Coast Canada? Flying around wastes quite a lot of time.

Because we want to see Boston. We went back and forth about where to go and for a variety of reason stuck with this plan.

Its not the US but I love Montreal. The absolute beauty of that city reminds me of France.
