Has anyone done the Flåm railway in Norway? Or the ferry Bergen to Flåm?

Looking at doing this in Easter. Wondering if we should do railway to Flåm or train journey. Which would be most enjoyable and most scenic?

Watching with interest.

Just realised in my op I meant railway or ferry.

reading some reviews says the carry is actually a high speed catamaran and the views are from tinted windows not on deck. But these reviews were a while ago so not sure if still valid

Are you thinking about a trip there missambrosia?

Book early! I tried to do it in the summer, but it was fully booked

I went to Flam on a day trip from a cruise liner. A lovely place. Did not know a scenic train went there. Certainly a very pretty place to explore. We explored the port area for a while and went on a coach ride to a coffee shop on a very high place then bus drove back down hairpin bends. DH loved that bit but made me feel a bit queezy after cream tea. I closed my eyes.

What was fully booked champagne? Train or ferry ? Or both maybe?

I’ve down the train ride up ( with a hired bike with me , easy to rent at base), then cycled back down . Such fun and I’m not at all super fit . My dd was about 8 or 9 at the time and she did it too !

We have been on Flam railway in summer and on boats in the fjords. Flam was very good and very scenic. Was touristy obviously.

Sounds amazing. Maybe I need to get a book on it. Not sure how much needs to be booked in advance and how much I can do when we get there

When I was visiting Bergen for a few days, I booked on a day trip which involved the train from Bergen to Myrdal, then the Flåmsbana halfway down the mountain, then on a bike for the remaining trip to Flåm, rib boat through the fjord to Gudvangen, minibus to Voss, then the train back to Bergen whenever we wanted.

Similar to this, though they seem to have stopped the half-Flåmsbana, half-cycle option.

I booked it a few days in advance, once I had an idea of the weather forecast.

If you're coming from Voss, doing the Flamsbåna up the mountain and cycling down would be awesome. There are lots of options, like white-water rafting, depending on how active you are.

I have done it. It was the most beautiful train journey I've ever been on. You've just inspired me to back at my photos. We went in June, we had the most perfect weather, but I can imagine it is picturesque in all seasons.

tribpot · 06/12/2022 12:24

We went by train from Oslo to Myrdal and then the scenic railway down into Flåm. We stayed overnight, it's such a beautiful place. Then got the early morning sightseeing boat round to Gudvangen, bus to Voss and then train on to Bergen. Really recommended.

The sightseeing boat is like this (this is one of the two they have) so maximising the outdoor viewing space, it was brilliant.

JuniperStJames · 06/12/2022 12:36

We took the train up and then went halfway back down in the train and walked the last 11 km (you ask the conductor and they stop the train so you can get off). It is a beautiful and really easy walk down, I would definitely recommend it

mondaytosunday · 06/12/2022 12:45

Yes I did the Flam railway. It was good but we went end of August and by the time we got to the top everything was shrouded in clouds so no view. Check out weather conditions in Easter before booking.
Loved Bergen.

Toppl · 06/12/2022 14:41

Thank you for all your advice. Really appreciate it. Just need to go through the various websites and work out which train/ boats to book

Yes, it's stunningly beautiful. We did the 'Norway in a Nutshell' tour out of Bergen: boat trip first followed by the railway. It was April, and snowing, so the scenery was out of this world, with frozen waterfalls etc.

I'd recommend it 100%.

Has anyone done the Flåm railway in Norway? Or the ferry Bergen to Flåm?
tribpot · 07/12/2022 12:47

We did Norway In A Nutshell the other way around. I know it's cheaper to book the individual sections separately but I loved that it was so simple and we got our luggage transferred separately from Oslo to Bergen, so just travelled with hand luggage (enough for an overnight stay). There is actually quite a lot of room on the sightseeing boat for luggage, although I feel like not a lot of room on the Flåmsbana train.

Toppl · 07/12/2022 15:01

Just been on the Norway in a nutshell website and looks good. Wondering if I should do this now

tribpot · 07/12/2022 15:45

It does simplify everything - but obvs they add a premium. It's definitely possible to book everything yourself.
