Corsica

I have wanted to go to Corsica for a long, long time and now that dh is retired we can go anywhere at any time.
Problem is, we don't, either of us drive and dh is not very energetic and finds it hard to walk uphill. So what we would need to know is whether there is reasonable public transport and where we would be best, hotel, self catering or whatever.

Any ideas? TIA

Been to Corisca and loved it, its a beautiful place to go and fairly unspoilt. If you dont have a car it would probably be better for you to go to a hotel, you could probably then chose to do excursions that the hotel offer. We went Self Catering and stayed in Calvi with a 3 and 4 year old. Have to warn you however that Corsica is quite mountainous, we hired a car and drove around a fair bit but most places we visited we had to do a fair amount of walking uphill.

Dh and I went to Corsica on our honeymoon back in 2000. We stayed in Ile Rousse in this place. It was self catering. It was lovely, but be sure to ask for a room with balcony. We had one of the larger rooms, it had a litle kitchen and a huge balcony (from memory it might be the room shown in the picture on the second page top left of their photo gallery). I think we were very very lucky to get this room (we didn't know there was such difference in quality of rooms).

Ile rousse itself is a small village with a nice beach. Surroundings are beautiful. We got there on a fast ferry from Nice (rented a car there).

If you're interested I could see if i can dig out some more info.

Vond het erg grappig om iemand met de nick DutchOma te zien, vooral omdat je info vroeg over Corsica. Wij willen graag een keer terug, waren erg onder de indruk van omgeving en bewoners. Het is een soort van mix tussen Franse en Italiaanse invloeden, zowel wbt de inwoners, als de cultuur, de taal en de cuisine. Niet zo raar natuurlijk als je de ligging bekijkt. Tot nog toe zijn we nog niet toegekomen aan een tweede Corsica trip, en besteden onze vakanties aan reisjes naar familie etc.

Wij wonen al meer dan dertig jaar in Engeland. Mij man was in het leger, maar kwam daar al na twee jaar uit. Daarna zijn we in Northampton gaan wonen, zijn een keer verhuisd en wonen al vanaf 1975 in dit huis. Twee kinderen, een getrouwd in Wellingborough en een die net met man en kind van een jaar naar Chesham verhuisd is.
Dat hotel dat je hebt aanbevolen lijkt me wel wat, is het inderdaad maar een mijl en en half naar de haven van waaruit je uit Nice aankomt. Wij hebben nl geen auto en mijn man loopt ook niet zo goed. Waar haal je je levensmiddelen vandaan? Organiseert het hotel excursies? Is er een bus of trein in de buurt? 't Is best wel moeilijk om iets te vinden wat voor mij leuk is maar niet te vermoeiend voor Bob.

Agree that Calvi is a great main base for managing without a car
I would recommend staying there for a while, using the Tramway de la Balagne to get around the beautiful NW coast (including L'Ile Rousse) and then maybe moving on by train via Corte to take the stunning railway through the mountains as far as Ajaccio. If it is not officially A Great Railway Journey of the World it should be - the Gorges de la Restonica etc
See if Corsican Places can help you put together an itinerary - they know the island very well. They have lovely places to rent in Calvi and offer room deals at several of the island's nicest hotels
Treat yourselves it is such a lovely place

Hai, ben ik weer even.. De tip van Marina is een goeie: Corsican Places. Zij noemen zichzelf -terecht- de experts. Wij hebben toedertijd ook hun brochure in huis gehaald, maar hebben uiteindelijk zelf onze trip geregeld omdat het allemaal iets te ingewikkeld werd met onze reis (we zijn in Nederland getrouwd, en vlogen dus vanuit Schiphol naar Nice, waar we de eerste nacht in een hotel hebben overnacht. Dat hadden we niet van te voren geboekt, en het was dus een heel gestress om een plekje te vinden ).
Ook omdat we 7 jaar geleden -zeker na een trouwerij- ook niet echt rijk waren...

Calvi is groter dan Ile Rousse, en een stuk touristischer. We zijn er tijdens onze huwelijksreis wel geweest, en de route (in de auto) tussen Ile Rousse is schitterend. Het schijnt zelfs mooier te zijn vanuit de trein, maar je moet wel rekening houden met onbetrouwbare trein tijden, hoewel dat als je op vakantie bent met alle tijd van de wereld je je daar misschien niet zo aan stoort. Er zijn overigens ook taxis, maar we hebben hier zelf geen ervaring mee. Je kunt een aantal locale nummers voor Ile Rousse vinden op de site van het hotel.

Ile Rousse zelf is een stuk kleiner (ca.2500 inwoners). Wij haalden elke morgen een baguette bij de bakker (als-ie er nog zit na 7 jaar, dat is dat net om de hoek). En er is een supermarkt. 's Avonds aten we meestal buiten de deur.

Ik heb Corsican Places gemaild, maar nog geen antwoord. Niet zo verwonderlijk in het weekend.
We zullen zien wat er van terecht komt, soms word ik wel eens een beetje wanhopig omdat Bob zo weinig fut heeft.
We zien wel, leuk in ieder geval om te schrijven.
Toen ik nog op de Open University website ging mocht je niet in andere talen dan Engels corresponderen, MN schijnt daar (nog) geen last van te hebben

We had our honeymoon on Corsica -- went by train from the UK to Nice, ferry to Calvi, train to Corte then to Bastia, ferry from there back to Nice. It was lovely

Our favourite place was Calvi, we stayed here which is a lovely hotel.

Hi Corsica is beautiful - I'm envious! DP and I went to Corsica in 2000 (pre children) and stayed in a lovely hotel called Roc E Fiori which is in Porto Vecchio. There is a pool and it was, as I recall, fairly close to the beach. I typed in Roc E Fiore on Google and got a number of hits which link to the hotel. The hotel was very pretty - we went fairly early on in the season so it wasn't too busy. I think we booked with Simply Corsica. Hope you find something anyway. Good luck!
