If you had five months, where would you travel?

Sadly, not for me!

Approx. five months, first couple of months in Asia, final month in Canada/Alaska. Currently looking at Cuba, Madagascar, Mexico, Costa Rica. Has already travelled fairly extensively, including Everest Base Camp and Maccu Picchu.

Fit/active/into adventure female in her 30's.

Be really grateful for any thoughts/ideas/experiences.

I would definitely include South Africa.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 27/11/2022 18:20

I would go sailing around the Norwegian fjords but I know that is not for everyone.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/11/2022 18:21

New Zealand, via Iceland, Canada/Newfoundland.

HundredMilesAnHour · 27/11/2022 18:27

I'd either go to South America or Australia/NZ (including Fiji etc). I'd stick with one continent to maximise the experience rather than jumping around (unless I had bags of money).

Icouldbedeadnextyear · 27/11/2022 18:28

I’d personally concentrate on places too far away for standard holidays.

Cook Islands/Fiji/Hawaii/Tasmania

Argentina and Chile (although not impossible for a 2 week trip)

Or somewhere so vast that 2 weeks isn’t enough - Brazil

Africa is also an amazing continent. Malawi/Tanzania/Zambia/Namibia are all easy to travel in. Perhaps looking at some overlanding companies for company.

I’m sure Cuba, Madagascar, Mexico, Costa Rica are on most peoples wish list, but to me they are accessible with normal holidays- money allowing

TizerorFizz · 27/11/2022 18:30

South America. So much to see and do. I agree with the one continent approach. Ecuador to the Antarctic floats my boat! (I know the Antarctic is another continent but you have to include it in a 5 month trip!)

FinallyFluid · 27/11/2022 18:31

I would go to my happy place in Spain and read and read and read and drink wine and snooze and read..............

Doowop1919 · 27/11/2022 18:42

I'd love to do Costa Rica. Combine it with Panama/Mexico.

SwedishEdith · 27/11/2022 18:46

Somewhere in South America. Chile is expensive, I believe, but people who've been have loved Bolivia and Colombia, in particular.

amylou8 · 27/11/2022 18:46

I'd take the train through Eastern Europe, then cross into Asia at Istanbul and follow the silk road to China. I'd then fly to SE Asia, and spend what time was left in Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

roarfeckingroarr · 27/11/2022 18:54

I would go back to India and Nepal

roarfeckingroarr · 27/11/2022 18:55

Sorry you've already been to Nepal. Hmm... India and Vietnam.

Gonegrey31 · 27/11/2022 18:56

Patagonia! Especially the Chilean parts . Amazing!

ajandjjmum · 28/11/2022 10:13

Some fantastic suggestions here - I'd love to drive from the UK to Cape Town! She's looking at covering distant places that couldn't be done in a two week holiday.

Has spent a school term and a couple of holidays in South Africa, and has family in Australia. Apparently it would be monsoon season in India when she would travel, so will have to save that for a holiday later.

Going to leave her this thread to look through at the weekend.

Thank you all!

@SwedishEdith
Chile is not expensive. However it’s a very long country so you have to factor air travel into a normal length holiday there. You wouldn’t need to for 5 months.

midsomermurderess · 28/11/2022 20:49

I’d travel through Mongolia and some of the Stans. I’d also love to travel through Iran, but not the best time for that, and up into Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Peccary · 28/11/2022 22:24

Patagonia to Guatemala or vice versa depending on seasons, we did this over six months including Spanish school. South America has everything.

Dreaming0ftomorrowing · 02/12/2022 09:54

Unsure of your budget

You could go to New Zealand, Tasmania, Micronesia
Antarctic
Then back up via
Bali/Indonesia
Borneo
Philippines
Malaysia
Vietnam
Thailand
Singapore
Perhaps add Australia & Japan ?

Depends what sort of thing you want to see & do

Some places are much more expensive like NZ

Rainbowqueeen · 02/12/2022 09:57

Mongolia
Vietnam
Mexico
Patagonia

Turmerictolly · 02/12/2022 10:16

We did a trip of this length once. Started off in South Africa (was meant to be 2 weeks but extended to 4 as loved it) then flew to Singapore for a few days. After that Vietnam - travelled by train up and down, then went on to Australia and New Zealand (travelled around) then a week or so in Raratonga (Cook Islands), then San Francisco, then New York to home.

We used a round the world ticket ) Singapore Airlines) with some internal flights in each country so we could maximise the sight seeing.

Turmerictolly · 02/12/2022 10:20

We've also travelled extensively in South America and Asia, China. As a woman I experienced some unwanted attention in India, Morocco and Tunisia. Also need to be careful in South Africa. I mostly travelled as part of a couple though.

TizerorFizz · 02/12/2022 13:05

I would not look at loads of unconnected countries for 5 months. Too many flights. Looking at a continent such as South America makes more sense. Brazil and Argentina are huge with so much to see. Add in Peru, Chile snd Ecuador you really do have 5 months. Both sides of the Andes! Also look at Australia and New Zealand. Lots to see in 5 months.
