I’m lying in bed with a cold and want to do some fantasy travel.

Where have been your top 3 places to see? Where should I go when I finally make it out of here (& win the lottery)

Mine

  • terracotta warriors
  • petra
  • Sigiriya

Costa Rica

Alaska and Canada

African Safari

Sadly until I win the lottery I’m unlikely to be able to afford any of them!

NoGoingBacktoThat · 26/11/2022 15:53

I’ve decided I’m winning the lottery. It’s also my retirement plan. Good huh?!

I’ll take you and the cats to Alaska with me @2catsand2kids

I want to ride the orient express from Istanbul station.
Stay in a chalet in the Alps in winter.
Cruise the Fjords.
Visit Skye and other Scottish Isles.

BritWifeInUSA · 26/11/2022 16:10

Galapagos
Machu Picchu
Bhutan

I also have a strange fascination to see North Korea.

MassiveSalad22 · 26/11/2022 16:11

Canada, for ages, see a lot

Bora Bora (or someone more unspoilt if BB is not spoilt?)

Anddddd hmmmm I’m not super exciting, it will be either of the road trip cliches - US or NZ.

HundredMilesAnHour · 26/11/2022 16:17

My top 3 places I've been (so far!) are

Melbourne, Australia - driving the Great Ocean Road (over 2-3 days), seeing the little penguins come home at night to their burrows at Phillip Island and OMG the coffee!

San Francisco - motorbike sidecar over the Golden Gate Bridge, walking through redwoods, having a private behind the scenes tour at Alcatraz and Yosemite in the snow

Vietnam - celebrating NYE on the back of a motorbike at midnight in HMC, private boat through the Mekong delta, drinking amazing coffee made by a little old lady at the side of the street in Hanoi and eating the most wonderful food (apart from the duck egg embryos!)

Next stop: back to Tasmania, one of my most favourite places in the world.

NoGoingBacktoThat · 26/11/2022 16:32

ignoring the cost, I find school holidays really restricting. We have exams and various other stuff to navigate.

Vietnam sounds fab. My DH and I decided to move in together in a Vietnamese restaurant - in London!

I spend far to much time day dreaming about travel.

Whilst in a Vietnamese restaurant. Not move into one. Although that might have been nice

Iceland geysirs and hot springs

flowerycurtain · 26/11/2022 17:57

My top 3 of my life so far are:

  1. orient express to Venice (honeymoon)
  2. Abu simbel
  3. Pompeii
Georgyporky · 26/11/2022 18:58

Terracotta warriors are also one of my best memories.
The sheer scale of the site, plus REAL food in the restaurant that hadn't been manipulated for supposed Western tastes.

Scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef.

Safari in Botswana. Wrong time of year for lions, so I need to go back.

Silkierabbit · 26/11/2022 19:13

3 favourites we have been on

Australia esp snorkelling / scuba diving in Great Barrier Reef, and all the wildlife we saw tree kangaroos, possums, koalas, kangaroos, platypus, crocodiles, bettong, hundreds of whales and dolphins

Costa Rica seeing the sloths, rainforest, zipline through jungle, toucans, monkeys, coati, raccoons, gecko, waterslide through jungle, kayaking in the ocean, active volcanoes, loved it

South Africa esp penguins in Boulders Bay on the beach and Table Mountain

Jax9807 · 27/11/2022 00:05

My top 3 places would have to be Belize, Jordan and Tanzania. I'm a total safari addict- it's the most incredible thing I've done!

NoGoingBacktoThat · 27/11/2022 09:29

Still in bed, coughing now so that’s a joy

@Jax9807 tell me about Tanzania! I’d love to go. What should I do? I won the lottery (I’m sure they’ll call later) so cost isn’t an issue

If I book a world cruise, what route am I taking, and how long?

…. do I start at Southampton?

openinggambit · 27/11/2022 10:35

I really enjoyed a Kenyan safari, it was really special.

KnickerlessParsons · 27/11/2022 10:46

Marrakesh
The drive from Adelaide to Alice Springs
London

PermanentTemporary · 27/11/2022 10:51

My favourite trips of the past feature

  1. Red Bologna - the city with the best food in Italy
  2. Taking the train south and waking up running through North Italy on the way to Rome
  3. Glorious, glorious California in the spring. My 50th birthday on Santa Monica beach. The incredible beaches and scenery of the coastal road. Hills covered in wild cyanothus (sp?). San Francisco. Oh God I would be there in a heartbeat.
DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/11/2022 11:01

My top 3 already done:

  • St Petersburg - the Hermitage, Peterhof, Mariinsky ballet (probably not really viable now, may have to wait till Putin's gone)
  • Zambia safari (always liked the idea but Kenya/South Africa didn't appeal. Zambia was exactly what I dreamed a safari would be)
  • Iceland - just a short break, should have gone for longer

Next up:

  • Galapagos
  • Scottish Islands, possibly Orkney, maybe a small ship cruise
DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/11/2022 11:03

Oh, a third 'next' - sleeper train, possibly combined with Scottish islands or maybe to Cornwall

NoGoingBacktoThat · 27/11/2022 17:07

I would like to visit Russia, but you’re right in it’s not viable right now. A pity as I’d def go

Update in the lottery: I won! A lucky dip. A step closer 😂

@NoGoingBacktoThat
We have travelled quite a lot. Just back from Buenos Aires and earlier an expedition cruise to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. Patagonia and the Lake District have a lot to offer. Ushuaia - not so much! We started in Puerto Madryn and visited the Peninsular Valdez - spectacular orca viewings.

Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest is fantastic! Not visited much and best done by small boat, it’s amazing for whales, bears and even a wolf or two! A very special place.

The Galápagos Islands and Ecuador come highly recommended. We have also had amazing safaris in Zambia and we love Botswana. Lions are there all year round. Just choose the right places to go.
