City break recommendations, please!

Looking to book one or two 3 night city breaks rather than a sunshine holiday next year.

We have already done Edinburgh, Rome, Venice, Berlin, Copenhagen. So none of these!

I do not fancy Paris as have researched and don’t think it’s overly safe. Also have a dairy intolerance so usually ask for vegan foods to be safe, or it’s good to go somewhere where English is widely spoken.

We’d be looking at going once in spring and once in autumn.

Would love to visit somewhere fascinating and/or beautiful, with good food, friendly locals and enough activities to do. Cheaper the better. Appreciate that’s a broad scope!

We are considering:
Munich
Amsterdam
Budapest
Prague
Vienna
Valencia
Lisbon
Krakow
Warsaw

Has anyone been to the above and can recommend?

I've got a Dairy Allergy too and found Crete to be amazingly accommodating. Would that be too far?

PritiPatelsMaker · 25/11/2022 16:04

Forgot to say that Heraklion has great sightseeing, great food and lots of Sunshine Wink

iklboo · 25/11/2022 16:07

Rome was amazing and a lot cheaper than we thought it would be.

AnyFucker · 25/11/2022 16:07

Any of your list would be great. Sorry, that might not help much.

What would sway me is good flight times and the weather at a particular time of year

I have been to Prague, Krakow, Budapest and Amsterdam on your list and they are freezing from Dec to March. All highly recommended though.

You haven’t mentioned Barcelona. That is my all time favourite city break.

cptartapp · 25/11/2022 16:09

Seville. Done a few and that is my favourite.

PritiPatelsMaker · 25/11/2022 16:15

You haven't mentioned Florence either? I loved it there Wink

hairyunicorn · 25/11/2022 16:18

Amsterdam, we stayed on a house boat and there is so much to do and see, also loads of nice places to eat. Def a city you can take nice walks/bike/boat rides also

Jaffacakeorisitabiscuit · 25/11/2022 16:21

Lisbon
Stockholm

On your list been to Amsterdam, which I love, and Vienna (which is also lovely but didn't find it as 'walking friendly' as Amsterdam) I don't know that Paris is any less safe than any other European capital.

Went to Budapest recently and can thoroughly recommend.

Beautiful.
Loads to see.
Not too expensive.
Apparently one of safest countries in Europe.
I was surprised by the selection of vegan/vegetarian food on the menus.

MissAmbrosia · 25/11/2022 21:04

All fabulous. Though I didn't like Vienna. No atmosphere. Good if you like cake though. Munich, Budapest and Lisbon are probably my favourites from your list. Add Barcelona and Seville, definitely Seville. And Nice. And Montpellier. Basically there's just not enough time, nor holiday...

rookiemere · 25/11/2022 21:14

Budapest is wonderful. We went as a group with a friend who is gluten and dairy intolerant and found loads of great places to eat, like the Hungarian version of Nandos.

NiroJac · 25/11/2022 23:01

We’re in Amsterdam at the moment, fly home tomorrow after a 5 day break. Weather has been great, chilly first day and then winter sunshine. Lovely city, and have catered for my gluten & dairy allergies very well.

frozengoose · 25/11/2022 23:12

I didn't warm to Vienna, very clean and safe though.
Amsterdam's red light district put me off the whole city really.
I enjoyed Granada and Bilbao as alternatives.

IntentionalError · 25/11/2022 23:32

I have been to all op of the cities on your list except Warsaw, and I enjoyed all of them. Amsterdam is very easy & cheap to get to and English is very widely spoken. Munich is lovely, the people are great and it’s not super touristy. Except for Oktoberfest, obv. Might not be the best option for vegans, though. Prague is beautiful but very touristy in the old town. You really can’t go wrong with that list.

I will give you even more options to consider by suggesting Seville & Bilbao. Both in Spain, but at opposite ends of the country so totally different. Seville is beautiful, historic & very Mediterranean. Bilbao ha the most amazing foodie culture.

Teacakexo · 26/11/2022 00:08

I would recommend Barcelona, it’s a fab city break!

notacooldad · 26/11/2022 00:13

I e been to all of them and love them for a city break. However my favourite is Oslo in the summer. I keep going back there. It's a relatively small city and absolutely loads to do. I've been 12 times and will be going again from May on wards. Just dont go when the marathon is on!!!
I'd also consider Barcelona and Malaga. Again lots to do, nice weather and easy to get to. Same with Porto

Arcadia · 26/11/2022 12:57

Bruges is also nice, very safe

Lovetotravel123 · 26/11/2022 13:01

Prague or Seville.

BlameItOnTinder · 26/11/2022 13:08

Lake Maggiore

gogohmm · 26/11/2022 13:11

Budapest definitely, had allergy information on menus too.

Lisbon is also lovely and quite a contrast

emmathedilemma · 26/11/2022 15:17

Barcelona is amazing, so much to see and do.
Budapest was interesting too.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Amsterdam
Belfast is also good

Vanillalime · 26/11/2022 15:43

I’ve visited all of your list with the exception of Warsaw.

They are all great cities in their own way but I would choose Lisbon (with a day or 2 in Sintra) for springtime & Munich (with a day in Mittenwald) for autumn.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 26/11/2022 16:01

Budapest or Lisbon from your list.

Munich also lovely.

seville is amazing and weather usually brilliant

grayhairdontcare · 26/11/2022 16:12

Budapest

HappyBook · 27/11/2022 11:48

We much preferred Porto to Lisbon. I’d suggest Dubrovnik and Athens as well. Lots of Eastern Europe I think is better as winter or Christmas market type trips.
