Am travelling to Athens- alone!- in December. I am keen on Greek archaeology/history and would like some recommendations for tours or trips in and around Athens. Thinking of day trips to Delphi and Mycenae?

I went on a package holiday of classical Greece way back in the mid 80s, in September, so maybe not relevant to what you're planning...
But, that said, as well as sites in Athens itself, I'd definitely recommend going to Delphi if you can. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited, on top of the historical interest. Easily do-able in a day from Athens is Cape Sounion: beautiful coastal setting and a classical temple.
Corinth (including a trip through the Corinth Canal), Mycenae, Epidaurus, Napflio, Olympia are all worth visiting, though many probably wouldn't be feasible as day trips from Athens.
Hopefully others will reply soon with more up to date info.
Have a great trip whatever you decide on. It's such a wonderful country.

I was looking into this for next April and thought that Sounion and Corinth were easily reachable by public transport. Delphi, and Mycenae (with Epidaurus) seemed well served by tour companies. It might also be possible to get out to Olympia but would probably be a hire car or taxi trip as it is a lot further away.
