Middle name on booking/flight ticket

Dear all,

I am flying on Aegean Airlines in Spring to Greece. I booked the tickets on Lastminute which were great value for money. I have now been informed by Aegean that middle names should be added to bookings. Both Aegean and Lastminute do not have a slot for including middle names on the booking form. Aegean also only has Mrs, Mr, and Dr as titles and a little girl in the party is down as Mrs on the booking when viewed on their website. But I digress.
I have tried contacting LastMinute who have said no changes can be made. Only cancellation is possible, although this is ultimately their issue as they have no provision to add it. Aegean have said they can only make a change when check-in starts in 5 months' time, and that would incur a fee and extra cost as the tickets will cost more by then. Further they stated if I had booked on their website, I would still need to pay to make the change even though there is nowhere to add the middle name. I was told it should be added together with the first name in the first name slot.
I am tired of fighting LastMinute on this. So, my question is, in everyone's experience, have you needed to add you middle name to your booking/ticket to fly? Have you come upon this issue of no place to add your middle name/s? Have you had any issues flying on a ticket with only your first and last name showing? And has anyone had experience flying with Aegean with these circumstances? I am hoping I will not need to cancel this as I know that can have its issues as well and I am stressed already. Any help and advice on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I've never had a middle name on a booking, ever
I have 2 middle names so they likely wouldn't fit in the space anyway

Slowslowlavaflow · 22/11/2022 15:59

Thank you for the response @dementedpixie

That gives me hope. I am hoping to hear a chorus of this.

I just checked my last flight booking - no middle names, and by accident I seem to have booked me with my shortened first name instead of the one in my passport (I do usually put proper name)
it was with EasyJet, & only to the Channel Islands, but it wasn’t a problem!

GiantKitten · 22/11/2022 16:06

Last flight before that was with BA to Italy - no middle names 🙂

Slowslowlavaflow · 22/11/2022 17:24

@GiantKitten Thank you for checking. Much appreciated. Feeling more reassured.

Just checked two flights I have next year and there are no middle names on either booking.

However, when the time comes to add Advance Passenger Information to the bookings and then to check-in online then the names given should match whatever is on the passports. I don't see why you can't just add the middle names then and it shouldn't cost you anything.

Why/how have Aegean contacted you now about this, especially as your booking is with Last Minute and not direct with them?

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 22/11/2022 17:49

Given I booked DH a ticket as Mrs John Smith, and they weren't bothered, I'm sure the young girl traveling as Mrs will be an issue. There was something about titles not being g in the machine readable bit of the passport.
Not sure about middle names.

StopFeckingFaffing · 22/11/2022 17:53

I don't have a middle name but my DH and DC do and I have never included their middle names in any flight or holiday booking

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 22/11/2022 17:56

is your middle name on your passport? They usually say that your booking needs to match your passport. Might be cheaper to change your passport than the flight

gogohmm · 22/11/2022 18:00

Never have put it on my booking, you do need to include it on the api to match your passport, this is separate

user573010482911233445559002281818484 · 22/11/2022 18:00

No middle names on any of my flights taken or on future booking for next year.

Swampthing55 · 22/11/2022 18:02

It should match you passport, my partner has a stupid name like John Billy Bob Wayne and we have to have all of them. And he is lord. It makes me cringe

dementedpixie · 22/11/2022 18:03

The first name and surname need to match on the booking. The API you submit would include any middle names

Slowslowlavaflow · 22/11/2022 18:45

@Jones9876 Thanks for checking.
The question of middle name came up after booking and after getting a no to adding them from Last Minute, I contacted Aegean to double check if it was necessary as on their website there is also nowhere to add a middle name.

I did ask them about API on check-in and they stated they don't ask for names, only passport number and nationality.

Thank you all for confirming your middle names are not on the booking ticket. I will fill the API as appropriate, although as I mentioned, the agent stated they do not ask for the name. I guess I shall have to see when the time comes.

I've never put middle names on a flight booking. I have two, one is long, so unlikely I'd have been able to fit them all on anyway. Even Ryanair, who are always looking for an opportunity to catch you out and fleece you of even more money, don't ask for this.

MarthanotMarfa · 22/11/2022 18:57

I’ve flown with them quite a few times and we always have booking/passport middle name differences as my husband has two long middle names. I have never even had a second glance. don’t mention it though!

Slowslowlavaflow · 22/11/2022 18:59

@MrsMigginsCat
Thank you. They are notorious indeed.

I wonder what Aegean is like. I have no experience with them. I hope they don't add a marker to my booking stopping me checking in online and forcing a counter check-in. I have heard from someone who has been pulled aside by check-in counter staff for missing their middle name. Thankfully it was added and there was no fee. There is also an article online where someone had to pay £300 for a new ticket. It was an unfamiliar airline though.

@MarthanotMarfa
Have I possibly caused an issue by querying, do you think?

OP posts:
MarthanotMarfa · 22/11/2022 19:24

No not at all - I just meant don’t mention it at the check in desk! They’re service agents for the airline so have no connection but I always think if you bring something up they feel obliged to delve into a problem that’s not there!

arghtriffid · 22/11/2022 19:57

I have a flight soon and haven't added middle names. Should I leave it off passenger info too? OP I would have gone through obliviously.

Slowslowlavaflow · 22/11/2022 20:53

@MarthanotMarfa
Thanks for clarifying. I got extra worried there. I am hoping to just check-in online and bypass the check-in counter, as we will only have carryons. Do you remember at all if the API allows you to add your name as it appears on your passports?

@arghtriffid
I think what everyone is advising us to do is add our full name as displayed on our passports when completing the Advance Passenger Information. The API seems to be what matters and needs to match your passport when at the airport. I of course have been told by the Aegean agent that I will not be asked my name when completing this, so 🤷
I will have to see when the time comes. Just sucks to worry about it for 5 months.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 22/11/2022 21:01

The API I have filled in usually asks for names and passport numbers.

crosstalk · 22/11/2022 21:05

You do have to have the correct first name and surname or run the risk of paying an extortionate fee at the airport.

I mistakenly booked with correct surname but instead of first name the nickname I've been known by for decades. Think Rich instead of Richard. £85 to change the name on the ticket so it matched the passport and I could board the flight.

Never heard of middle names being needed to match.

feliciabirthgiver · 22/11/2022 21:13

Just checked my last Aegean booking and definitely no middle names, also I thought the airline were great (on time, comfortable plane and very friendly crew).
