Slovenia & Croatia summer holidays

We are thinking of going to Slovenia for one week and Croatia for another one.

Where should we based ourselves that is easier to drive to different places in Slovenia. Thinking of somewhere near the mountains with nice relaxing scenery.

Similar in Croatia but close to the sea for swimming and easier to drive to beautiful places

Bled is a pretty good base, and so beautiful.

Bohinj. It’s less touristy than Bled. The lake is bigger too.

Bled is beautiful and a good base with lots of lovely places to eat and drink. It's one of my favourite places in the world. We adore it there 😊

We stayed in Unesic, north of Sibenik in Croatia and that was ideal. Could easily get to the beach, national parks and Trogir, Split etc.

Thank you. Will check accommodation on the places recommended

Second Bohinj! Very quiet, not as touristy, had some great food there. Did several nice day trips from there too.

Pula is v nice lovely beaches and good transportation

I did a tour of Slovenia last summer. We stayed in a resort called kransjka gora. It is surrounded by mountains and within walking distance of some of the lakes. From there, we did day trips to Ljubljana, bled and bohinj

Yes to both, BUT it's that bit further to do day trips which OP wants. (I had a lovely two centre holiday with one week at each a few years ago.)

Will check Kransjka Gora; sounds ideal

I'd suggest Kranjska Gora for Slovenia, as it's still pretty close to Bled and Bohinj, but a more straightforward journey to other parts of Slovenia for day trips. For Croatia, you're probably best sticking to Istria, around Rovinj is lovely.

Just a note of warning - there is an actual border crossing between Croatia and Slovenia as Croatia is not yet a full EU member. We had a bit of a wait, but not too bad - I think it's particularly busy on Saturdays in the summer as a lot of Europeans drive rather than fly on holiday!

We stayed in Porec which was lovely. Hotel was on the island just offshore so a ferry took us to and fro. Porec old town is mainly pedestrianised, lots of historic buildings, a beautiful old church. We had a day trip by hydrofoil to Venice. And visited Pula which is a beautiful town, and went on a tour of the Istrian countryside. Rovinj just down the coast is another lovely coastal town.

Recently stayed in Zadar and it was a gorgeous place. Good road connections too. I was also surprised at the very, very cheap cost of ferries to visit other islands.

For Croatia I'd say Rovinj - you can do Pula in a couple of days from there but Rovinj is much nicer.

All of Slovenia is beautiful so it's hard to recommend! You'll have a great time wherever you go Smile
