why do holiday companies think a teen wants to sleep on a sofa for 2 weeks?

Trying to look for suitable accommodation for a family holiday for 2 x adults and 3 x teenage children. Kids happy to share.

Do you think I can find a triple room with three PROPER BEDS?? All the rooms marketed as family rooms or triple rooms have two proper beds, and either a z-bed or sofa bed. Fine for a 5 or 6 year old. Not fine for a 15 or 16 year old.

I'm the smallest!! And I'm not sleeping on a sofa bed.

Is it really that unusual for children over the age of 14/15/16 to go away with family?

I don’t think it’s unusual to all go away no, but the objection to the sofabed maybe is… SIL has 3 teens, eldest nephew is 6ft4 and he apparently prefers a double sofabed over a single bed because he fits better when he can lie down diagonally!

Ignore that talk.it’s not unusual at all.
sofa beds have really upped their quality in recent years too.if it’s a decent hotel I think they will be ok. Also have you read for reviews on the rooms with them in?surely some have commented on the state of them.
even get in touch with the hotel and ask?

We gave in and booked 2 double rooms this year. DD complained about the sofa bed 3 years ago, she was 12 at that time. Just a single size, due to the size of the "living" room.

I spent one night on a sofa bed 5 years ago when DD wasn't feeling well and we took turns with her and I never had such a bad night sleep.

But - do try and book via Tui/Jet2 or similar, we priced the hotel separately and DD was classed as an adult while with Tui, she was still a child. Massive price differnce if you go with a teen older than 12.

I think we will now go for appartments and self-catering in future.

I would book a villa with a private pool, and self cater with some meals in the villa and the rest eating out. It will probably work out cheaper than booking two/three rooms in a hotel. You will have more privacy, space & private pool for your family to use. It worked out better for us, when our kids became teens and were no longer interested in the hotel entertainment.

DH and I hate the sofa beds in hotel rooms too. We have two early teens, one of them is a size of a man already. All the sofa beds so far has been slightly too narrow for two to share comfortably and are always too rickety and mattress too thin. Fine for 1-2 nights but I don't want to sleep on one for the full duration of a holiday which is usually 1-2 weeks.

We are now in a situation where we just book two interconnecting rooms if needs to be. Also helps to have an access to two toilets and two bathrooms too.

Villas do have their advantages but that’s not the sort of holiday I want this time.

Is it unusual for older teens to go away with parents? What are all these 15 Yr olds doing for 2 weeks? I certainly see plenty of teens on holiday holiday their parents. Maybe an 18yr old but even then if it's an exciting holiday most teens would want to go.

I think it's just a case of if you want 3 beds you need to pay for an extra room. But a teenager is fine on a sofa bed, get them to take it in turns throughout the fortnight, either that or they can club together for the cost of an extra room

We stayed at the Creta Maris in Crete recently where the twin rooms had an additional full size proper bed (it was made up like a sofa but definitely a bed). Rooms were huge so lots of space for 3, hotel is all inclusive and lovely. It was very expensive though! (By our standards anyway, not sure what you're thinking of spending)

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 05/11/2022 22:44

I wouldn't be happy putting my 15 year old into another room (unless genuinely connecting ones), so would end up with dh in one and me in the other. I don't think I'd be allowed to book a room in most hotel except with an adult in it actually.

You need to book a villa. Jet2 villas is the way to go. The price includes car hire and villas have private pools, living areas, kitchen, and real bedrooms.

Have you heard of hotel resort villas? You’re still on a luxury resort, but you stay in a villa on hotel grounds instead of rooms. You can select different board types. Doesn’t have to be self-catering.

YANBU, this drives me mad about staying in hotels with the children.

POTC · 05/11/2022 23:02

We're staying in an Ibis in Geneva for a sports tournament next month, their triple rooms are 3 proper beds, although one is up higher

Of course it isn't. What are you even talking about? Just look harder to find what you want, or pay more, or do what most parents do: tell the teens to get the fuck over themselves and sleep where they are told, when they are getting taken on expensive holidays!!
