We are looking to have a week just before xmas somewhere warm. I have started looking but there is so much choice, I don't know where would suit us.
We are a couple with a 17 year old autistic daughter with learning disabilities. We need a resort with nice restaurants beach and an attractive town. I don't want somewhere too built up. I would like it to have a bit of charm and not be full of English bars and food. Any ideas welcome.

Costa Adeje area, Tenerife would be my pick

Or if you want somewhere smaller, quieter and more authentic then look at La Caleta - but there’s no real beach there

We like Costa Teguise in Lanzarote. We stay at the Sands Beach Resort which is nice as it has its own little lagoon beach.

I wouldn't bank on it being that warm. We went once in Nov and once in Feb and while it was sunny the wind was freezing. Depends what sort of holiday you are looking for but if you want pool / sunbathing it's something to keep in mind. Went in Sept a couple of years ago and weather was perfect.

Also most of the islands do tend to be windy - it may or may not bother your daughter but I know a few autistic children who struggle on windy days.

La Gomera, one of the smaller, further out of the Canaries. You’d need to get the ferry across from Tenerife South. It’s much greener and lusher than the other islands. Valle Gran Rey would be a good base, it’s compact, low rise, not at all Brits abroad/full English. It’s a twisty, turny drive up and across the island from the little capital.

Southern Tenerife (which includes Costa Adeje) has the warmest and most reliable weather.

Costa Adeja, Tenerife. Went first week of December for 10 days but a few years back lovely warm weather and amazing hotel we stayed in called the Bahia Principe.

Another vote for Costa Adeje, we spent new year there last year and the weather was fabulous.

We normally stay in Sunset Harbour Club apartments, gorgeous complex and lots of fantastic restaurants and beaches close by.

I also stayed in Costa Adeje and we hired a car as there’s so much to see and some really stunning drives.

I'd go to Cape Verde instead. Warmer weather. Or Egypt. The canaries in December are not particularly warm.

Another vote for Costa Adeje. It’s lovely.
