Lyon - best place to stay?

Driven through it many times and know it's massive. Arranging to meet up with a friend and go to the Xmas market etc. Whereabouts is best to look for accommodation? Any restaurant/activities recommendations also welcome.

I’d suggest the Presqu'île area, especially the middle/top part. It is essentially the centre with lovely 19th century buildings, Place Bellecourt, lots of restaurants, shopping, close to galleries, the Opera, good transport hub. You’re just across from the old city too which does get very, very busy so nicer pleasanter not to stay there. I’ve stayed elsewhere so can’t recommend specific hotels.

La Presqu’lle perhaps the most well-rounded place to stay. It’s got history, culture, a great range of shops, bars, and restaurants as well as accommodation options that suit all budgets,
Definitely wander around Vieux Lyon (old town). It’s a very pretty area with narrow medieval streets, silk shops, artisan food shops, historical squares and great views from the hill it’s on.
You can hike up or take the funicular to the top of the Fourvière hill. It is filled with historic attractions including the Basilica Notre Dame de Fourvière.

We had a day there on a river cruise and would love to go back. Have a great weekend.
