One wants mountains the other sunshine

Planning for summer holidays 2023. We head a lovely hot beach holiday this year. Our DS (14) says he would love to go to 'the mountains' next holiday. DD (16) just wants sun and a tan! I would love to do something a bit more adventurous than sitting on a beach again. Both are quite sporty and adventurous. I was thinking Northern Italy, lake and some mountains? Hoping for some sunshine and also some
Climbing and walking in the mountains. Does anyone have any good recommendations for places or companies
Or hotels to book with. We will fly, preferably a hotel half board or similar. Possible book to do via Ferrata climbing and mooching by a lake in the sun!

Northern Italy is a good shout and what about Slovenia?

Fivemoreminutes1 · 16/10/2022 08:43

We had a lovely stay at Alpen Resort in Zermatt. The family rooms were good and the hotel does a half board option.
There’s loads to do in Zermatt, including a Via Ferrata www.zermatt.ch/en/families/Funventure2/Outdoor-activities-for-summer2/Funventure-R-for-big-adventurers

Slovenia! Look at Lake Bled x

ordinarilyordinary · 16/10/2022 09:00

The Black Forest, Germany

BarrelOfOtters · 16/10/2022 09:03

Slovenia. Lake bled or bohinj. Loved it.

mumonthehill · 16/10/2022 09:04

We had the same from ds15 and have booked Lake Garda!!!

loadypoady · 16/10/2022 09:04

I would also recommend Lake Bled. It’s also easy to reach Ljubljana which is a fab city.
In fact Slovenia is a great country overall including its coastal resorts.

Harebrain · 16/10/2022 09:04

The French Alps would also meet all your requirements.

tarmum · 16/10/2022 09:07

Take a look at Montenegro. Bay of Kotor and coast back by mountains.

fairtrauchled · 16/10/2022 10:09

Lake Garda

AlloftheTime · 16/10/2022 10:14

Another vote for Slovenia!
we stayed in Maribor and went up the mountains, there are training facilities there so you might get see teams who go their for summer camp. We met several Cameroon squads.
great weather friendly locals and not too many people

CampervanQueen · 16/10/2022 10:29

Another vote for Slovenia. It has everything: mountains, Lakes and coast. It's stunning and relatively quiet as a tourist spot.

chocolatemmmmm · 16/10/2022 13:22

Yes to lake bled.

Todayissunny · 16/10/2022 13:26

Lake Idro north of Garda and less touristy.
Lac de Serre poncon in france.

Hbh17 · 16/10/2022 13:30

Southern Germany. We had fantastic sun & not weather this year, when the thermal spa pools come into their own, as well as the lake. Mountains are a bit of a distance, but it's very outdoorsy there (swimming, cycling, hiking, kayaking) if wanted. Look at the Bodensee.

pollina · 16/10/2022 13:42

France. Week in the south and a week hiking in the alps. Perfect!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 16/10/2022 13:45

Slovenia was one of the loveliest holidays we had. Thoroughly recommend it.

NotMeNoNo · 16/10/2022 13:48

Corsica delivers in both

OpposableThumbs2 · 16/10/2022 13:48

We stayed near Annecy when I was a teen. It was definitely warm enough to sunbathe and swim in the lake but also lots of activities to do nearby.

Havanananana · 16/10/2022 15:07

Slovenia, Austrian Alps (Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Zell am See, Innsbruck) or Northern Italy (Lake Garda etc). Southern Germany. French Alps....

Central Europe gets hot in the summer - 30 deg C and more for most of July and August - so anywhere that has lakes and mountains should satisfy both teenagers.

Many ski resorts have realised that there is a huge summer market too and have been increasing the number of activities available. For example, Saalbach has Europe's largest "Go Ape"-style park, mountain biking, hiking, white-water rafting down the road in Lofer, paragliding, an outdoor pool with a "beach" around it. Most of the hotels also have outdoor pools, as do some of the mountain huts. Then there are caves, salt mines and old silver mines within easy driving distance or reached by public transport, as well as Salzburg and Innsbruck for a day trip to a city.

Other resorts have similar offerings.

Winter99Mermaid · 16/10/2022 15:13

Morzine on French/Swiss border Alps, is good in summer has fab outdoor / indoor swimming complex, mountains to walk and ski lifts open for mtn biking with lots of bike hire. Huge ice skating indoor rink. Lake swimming & sunbathing. We had 30-40c in July bit too hot but it was exceptional heat the week we went.

EwwSprouts · 16/10/2022 15:13

California! Combine San Francisco with visitlaketahoe.com/

MadMadMadamMim · 16/10/2022 15:16

Go winter skiing. 😂

You'll get mountains and a suntan, generally.

LIZS · 16/10/2022 15:26

Lake Maggiore is more alpine than Garda. Austria might also be worth a look. Weather can be changeable in Alps though

YesitsBess · 16/10/2022 15:40

We have a place just south of Granada in Spain, loads of cycling, hiking and lake swimming, drive one hour up for skiing and alternatively one hour down for incredible beaches at Nerja or La Herradura!
