Break between Xmas and NY

We're travelling to the U.K. to spend Xmas with family for 16 nights. Last year it all got a bit cramped and felt a bit much. Yet I think my parents would take offence if we decided to stay in a hotel instead.
So this year me & DH are planning on spending 4/5 nights away in between Xmas and New Year, either in the U.K. or preferably somewhere else in Europe.
DH suggested New York but our flight back to the U.K. is 4.5 hours so not sure I want to spend even longer on another 2 flights in between our return one home.

We've not traveled much inside of Europe especially not in the winter, so looking for suggestions for somewhere quite cosy and Christmassy?
It'll also be our first child free break for 14 years, so want it to feel quite romantic.

What about Reykjavik in Iceland? Seeing the northern lights & a trip to the blue lagoon could be very romantic?
