Rome in spring - where to stay?

Have never been to Rome with kids and wondered where would be good to stay and/or if there were surrounding more rural / coastal bits which would be good for part of the time? This is an entirely hypothetical holiday sparked off by some musings of DS1...

Anyone?

I don't know with kids but we stayed near The Trevi Fountain which was lovely and central.
