South Africa - Madikwe or Pilansberg?

Taking family to SA at last. I'm beyond excited as it is my favourite place.
Flying to joburg and from there I would like 4 days in a park. I want to avoid Kruger Park as its malarial. Any views on Madikwe vs Pilansberg?
Going in October, good budget so price isn't a factor

I haven't been to Pilansburg but have been twice to Madikwe. Love it there; a proper safari feel. Easy drive from Jo'burg.

Thanks. Where did you stay in madikwe?

We stayed at Impodimo Game Lodge 8 years ago (can't believe it's been so long) with 2 children. Everyone was so nice and we were lucky enough to have our own jeep. Before that was 21 years ago and I really can't remember where we stayed; there would have been far fewer lodges at that time. Sun City (like it or loathe it) is a convenient stopping off point en route. Also the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site was a fascinating place to visit.

Thanks for the recommendation to the cradle of humankind site - Looks fascinating.
Definitely leaning towards Madikwe - it looks amazing.
Did you stop at sun city? My 3 teenagers do. It looks like a couple of days there at the end would be fun

I would not worry about malaria tablets. I’d definitely go to Sabie Sands. Sun City is not great. So much else to see and do! Our teens never thought about going there.

We did spend a couple of days in Sun City. The eldest was 12 and they loved The Valley of Waves. Freezing cold water as we were there in July (despite the warm weather), but didn't seem to put them off (no way I was getting in!). It is an odd place though (have passed through a few times); can't say it's my favourite but served a purpose. Where else are you planning to go on your trip?

We went on honeymoon to SA 5 years ago and spent 4 nights in Madikwe. It was amazing:)

I used to live in SA & have done both - Madikwe absolutely hands down.

We stayed at Madikwe Hills and it was one of the best places we have stayed at. Sightings were incredible, we saw the Big 5 & did a walking safari.

Throwing another option into the mix…

we stayed at Mhondoro in Welgavonden and it was absolutely magical

Very family friendly, incredible rooms (with private swimming pools on your deck that elephants come and put their trunks in for a drink!) brilliant food etc
We can’t wait to go back

its 3.5hrs drive on the motorway from Joburg
