Be prepared to spend more. Christmas and New Year's cruises are often the most expensive of the year. Also flights at that time of the year can be outrageously pricy. You might want to choose a cruise departing from a Uk port so you can avoid flying altogether or book a fly cruise where flights are included.
If you want to cruise from the UK, most cruise ships will go to the Canary Islands or the Mediterranean for Christmas. Some go to colder places such as Norway, Amsterdam or Belgium.
It’s important to consider whether you want to spend Christmas Day at sea or in port. A lot of itineraries factor in a sea day for 25th December but some will make a stop in a port. Remember that shops may be closed as it’s a public holiday in many countries.
Cruising at Christmas can be very special. The decorations are out of this world, you don’t have to worry about food and everything is Christmas themed (e.g. all the music and onboard films). When we went, there were fake snow machines, ginger bread decorating, carol singing, midnight mass, wreaths on all the cabin doors, Santa’s grotto, elf workshops, a tree lighting ceremony…. I could go on! We felt that it was worth the money.

My next door neighbours have done a couple of P&O ones to the Canaries and really enjoyed them. They went for Christmas and the New Year and said lots of festive treats and activities were laid on for the guests.
