Hi everyone
we are going to Peru at the end of October and have had all of our injections apart from rabies which we were told we should book a month before we go ( 3 injections), I’ve been trying to book it for a month however there is a National shortage and nobody has any!
it’s not a necessary injection but is recommended. We’re going to the Amazon. Is there anyone in here who works in the medical profession and can suggest what we should do please?! Ie how high is the risk/ am I over worrying?! Thank you!

I don't think that I would be going to Peru with getting a rabies vaccine first.

Here's what the CDC think

I'm watching with interest - was planning a trip next year.
Superdrug do have a tel no. to call to find the nearest clinic.

I don’t know where you’ve tried, but when we needed some very specific malaria drugs we got them from a clinic at the School of Tropical Medicine in London.

Of all the things to take a chance on rabies is not the one. It's a certain death without the vaccine! That said, you can take the vaccine quickly after an exposure so if its available at your destination that might work too.

There's the immunoglobulin you need too though post exposure, and there's often a shortage of that in these far flung countries.
People have had to be airlifted to other counties for it in extreme situations.

I went a decade ago and only needed yellow fever as an extra.

Thanks, I tried Superdrug, none in stock! It’s a National shortage so nowhere has them and no one knows when they may be back in stock! 😫so annoying as we were really organised with our jabs and now no clue what to do! Friends of ours went in August and were told no need for rabies as normally only recommended if you are really remote and risk is low but as others have said if you’re an unlucky one it’s a huge risk to take!! Don’t imagine travel insurance would cover this and we have everything including a v expensive macchu pichu trip booked 😠

Have you tried ringing around the doctors surgeries? They used to offer travel clinics and we went to a local one (not at our own doctors surgery) for rabies jabs. Just wondering if they're more likely to have some in stock still rather than the national companies like Superdrug or Boots... although they might be a bit more expensive.

Our (young at the time) ds got bitten by a dog he was playing with in Peru. Fortunately it didn't break the skin but I was still glad we'd got the jabs.

in a private travel clinic in Milton Keynes and we have stock at the moment.

Oh I'm so glad you managed to get it sorted. I'm in the finance department rather than the clinical side but all of our nurses in the clinic are absolutely lovely so you'll be in safe hands.

Georgyporky · 21/09/2022 13:11

Thanks. We're within easy reach of MK, so I've bookmarked the site for next year.

Holidayqueen1 · 21/09/2022 15:51

I cannot speak highly enough of them so far, really really helpful and flexible too. We’re an hour away and need to take our son out of school for a couple of hours for one appointment but so worth it for peace of mind!!
