Warning Travel Insurance

We are off to France and Switzerland in October. We have European Cover on our car insurance. I rang this morning to tell the insurer our travel dates and am informed that although my Certificate of Insurance says that we are covered for Switzerland recent changes ( Brexit related) means that we are not.

Really? How odd.

Bottom line, always check what you are covered for, even when driving in the UK never mind going to another country. Check the other countries' road regulations/rules as well.

TreesAtSea · 20/09/2022 10:12

Did they elaborate at all? Switzerland has never been in the EU, though admittedly is a Schengen country, so it seems odd that Brexit would be a factor. Not doubting what you've said, just curious as to what the insurance company was getting at.

Which insurance company is it?

Havanananana · 20/09/2022 17:35

Travel insurance (as in the thread title) or car insurance?

The rules for using your GHIC/EHIC card in Switzerland have changed since Brexit, which might also impact on any travel insurance policy, but car insurance generally covers all countries in the EU, EEA and Schengen.

I meant car insurance sorry. Have had another call. I am covered - it would appear that the wording on the insurers system is not as clear as it is on their insurance certificates. So I set hares running a bit so sorry if I worried anyone.

However as pp said - it is good to check.

Do you mean car insurance or breakdown cover?

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 20/09/2022 18:17

My understanding is that all UK insurance also provides third party insurance. Gov.Uk lists the following countries:

•	the EUU_ (including Ireland)
•	Andorra
•	Bosnia and Herzegovina
•	Iceland
•	Liechtenstein
•	Norway
•	Serbia
•	Switzerland
