Just booked 4 nights in Iceland - what tours?

We've had a rough year as my daughter has had to have major surgery and it's been tough on her mental health so ive just treated us to 4 nights in Iceland.

We basically have an early flight on day 1 so I won't book anything for that day.

Day 2 I'd like to do the Southern tour, Day 3 maybe just the Northern Lights and Day 4 the Golden Circle.

My main question is about the last day. Our flight isn't till the evening and I keep reading that you can do the Blue Lagoon on the way to the airport. Im worried about it though as my daughter will NOT cope with communal naked showering or changing and will need to be certain that there is a hairdryer and mirror on hand. This is especially the case if we are then going on a flight!

Does anyone have any first hand experience of it? Would it be better to go on a trip there (or to another lagoon) on Day 2 as there would be time before the Northern Lights trip.

Sorry too much info there. I'm tying myself in knots!

Walking food tour of reykjavik was fun and I recommend it. also enjoyed "fly over iceland " near the harbour.

Secret lagoon is better and not far outside of the city. u can book from the terminal to take you there, even on the evening of your day 1 would be good.

at both lagoons people had their own shower cubicles. although i think the actual changing areas were communal. there was also hairdryers and mirrors at both.

I'd recommend car hire for the golden circle if you can, it's quite cheap and an easy drive (if the weather isn't trying to kill you).

Agree that the blue lagoon is an agreeable, crowded rip-off, but conveniently located on your way in/out. Set your satnav for Fontana instead if you want a fancy dip.

Or to Sundhöllin baths in central Reykjavik for £6/head instead. Spectacular old bath house with generous outdoor tubs. Big changing rooms, I think some cubicles too. Showers are not private but nobody tutted at my kids keep their costumes on.

Árbæjarlaug is another good one on the outskirts - great view, lots of outdoor tubs but very not-private changing rooms.

Northern lights tour sounds like hard disappointing work. If you can just be outside Reykjavik for a few hours when it's dark you stand a decent chance.

Enjoy, I'm jealous!

I would suggest the Sky Lagoon on day of arrival or day two as a lovely relaxing experience. It's just 15 mins from downtown Reykjavik. The showers are closed cubicles and mirrors and hairdryers are clean. Do the 7 step ritual.

Have a fabulous time. DS 18 and I went two weeks ago and it was a wonderful experience. Even saw the northern lights!

We did the Sundhollin public pool mentioned by @Mattbee on our last day. It was a fantastic sun trap & we were there ages. Most naked bodies I've ever seen in a changing room though.

The glacier lake and black beach are also great. Best thing we did was the black beach quad bike tour. We rode with the kids on the back, great fun

our kids loved Blue Lagoon. Touristy, yes. So what?!

Do you mean the glacier lake at Jökulsárlón? If so that is a very long day trip from Reykjavik.

(We are staying within the Golden Circle at half term and considering if we will do the long drive there.)

Weirdlynormal · 24/09/2022 08:24

@newname12345 we did it from Vik, but returned to Reyk the same day. It was really great fun though. Diamond beach was beautiful too.

we had our own car and so planned our timetable.

We are going to Reykjavik soon and want to book a northern lights trip. Can anyone recommend a company to book with please?

I haven't been yet but we've booked with bustravel.is they have a 3 for 2 offer that had the golden circle, south Iceland and northern lights for a really good price.

They get good reviews and we didn't want anything too fancy.
