Ideas for a split holiday - city then rural

PickySlackTastic · 19/09/2022 00:08

DD will be 15 next year. She only really wants to wander round cities and markets, people-watch and potter.

I just want to spend my time in incredibly quiet, beautiful places.

Dh and ds (14 next year) are more laid back and happy with whatever. Thank goodness Grin

So ideally, we’re looking at 4 nights in a city, 3 nights somewhere quiet and beautiful. Don’t want to have to spend more than 3 hours travelling between them.

Short haul.
Not France
A lake would be nice. As would mountains

Ideas please!

Ljubljana (city) then Lake Bled or Bohinj in Slovenia. Bled is prettier and warmer but Bohinj quieter and more majestic.

YourSpleenIsDamp · 19/09/2022 01:08

Naples then Sorrento?

MavisMonkey · 19/09/2022 01:12

Germany would work well with Munich and then time in the Bavarian lakes such as Lake Hintersee, Lake Schrecksee or Rugen Island. You could pair any of these with Salzburg as well / instead but I think a 15yr old would prefer Munich.
Depending on where you choose you might be able to do without a car as the German train system is so good.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 19/09/2022 07:05

Verona or Milan and then somewhere in the Italian lakes.

BookwormButNoTime · 19/09/2022 08:17

Another Slovenia vote. Blew me away

Veganuaryborn · 19/09/2022 08:22

Milan then Lake Garda or Lake Como

Sprig1 · 19/09/2022 08:23

If you are happy to stay in the UK you could do Bath then Exmoor.

I was going to suggest Munich/Bavaria

Oslo then fjords. Stunning.
Or Oslo - fjords - Bergen.

MsTSwift · 19/09/2022 08:26

Rome then Tuscany? Rome fab for teens glamour and history

Aeio · 19/09/2022 08:27

Another vote for Milan then Como.

Twizbe · 19/09/2022 08:30

I was going to suggest Germany too.

Lake Constance could provide both very easily.

Cheeselog · 19/09/2022 08:30

We just did Palermo then Sicilian coast which was fab but I would definitely also agree with the recommendation of Slovenia, it’s stunning. You can pair it with Venice fairly easily too.

Cheeselog · 19/09/2022 08:32

Forgot to add that Palermo is famous for its markets so might fit what your daughter is looking for.

Or Cardiff and then the Black Mountains. Beautiful.

EwwSprouts · 19/09/2022 09:09

Salzburg & Zell am See

Exactly what I was going to say!

legosunqueen · 19/09/2022 09:42

48 hours in Dubrovnik then a week on an island such as Lopud...this worked very well for us...

Havanananana · 19/09/2022 10:23

Another vote for Salzburg + Zell am See (for the lake and mountains) or Saalbach (for loads of stuff for teenagers to do in the mountains while you chill).

Clicheinaqashqai · 19/09/2022 10:28

Marrakesh and Imlil?

We did both and also Essaouira on our honeymoon and it was great.

So many ideas - thank you all so much. I’m going to really look forward to googling.

@Hedonism and @Sprig1 I would love to stay in UK. My dream holiday would be Highlands, but we’ve holidayed so many times in Wales, Lakes and Scotland and I’m really aware that my kids want to see more of the world.

Started googling Munich/Bavarian Lakes and I’m hooked. DD starting history GCSE this year and keen to go to Germany as she’ll do Weimar Republic.

Also really keen on Slovenia - will explore online. Thank you!

DH would love Salzburg. I have taken a look before at what that might look like as a holiday but hadn’t thought about going somewhere after. Thank you for the recommendation.

To the posters who suggested Italy, we went to Lake Garda the summer before covid. It was an awesome holiday - and the only time we’ve taken the kids anywhere abroad other than France.

Palermo then Sicilian coast sounds fantastic- especially the tip off re markets.

Thanks so much everyone

Fly into Salzburg. Stay 2 nights. Drive down to one of the carinthian lakes in Austria. End up in Ljubljana Slovenia for 2 nights city before flying back. It’s only about 3 hrs from Salzburg to Ljubljana straight down. So with stop off at a lake destination on route it wouldn’t be a long drive.

Or fly into Salzburg 2 nights city, drive into Germany to Lake chiemsee and surrounding areas, then onto Munich for 2 nights. The train or drive is only about 2hrs from Salzburg to Munich

ChilliPB · 20/09/2022 07:52

Lisbon or Porto and then a flight to the Azores.

SudocremOnEverything · 20/09/2022 07:54

Finland. I loved Helsinki (I was there for a weekend) and wish I’d also been able to head out to a cabin in the woods for a bit.
