NYC - should we stay midtown or Financial District?

Hi - we're heading to NYC for 6 nights in October (me, DH and 2 teenage DC). I've booked an aparthotel in midtown, which got really great reviews, but it was expensive - over $3000. We pay when we arrive, and with the pound getting weaker against the dollar it gets more expensive every day !

I am currently able to cancel the booking with no penalty, and I'm thinking about cancelling and booking somewhere in the financial district where I can find similar sized places for less (around $2300 currently).

Any of you who have been to NYC - what do you think? I know midtown is in the middle of things, but we're usually quite happy to walk / get public transport places. My younger DC is autistic and copes pretty well with things generally but does find really busy places a bit much, so I'm wondering if the financial district might be a better idea for them as its likely to be quieter at night.

Any thoughts welcome - I just can't decide!

I would go for the cheaper option. Manhattan isn't that big and it's easy to walk around, get the subway etc.

NYC is soooo expensive - definitely save the money for spends!

We stayed in Hell's Kitchen which I highly recommend, big advantage is it's also full of apartment buildings occupied by ordinary New Yorkers with more reasonable bars and restaurants accordingly. Just do watch out for "resort charges " added on arrival despite the U.K. booking site saying fees all included

I'm going for 7 nights and I'm thinking I might split it between 2 hotels. One financial / Brooklyn. One midtown or further up

We stayed in Financial District, it was a lovely hotel but there was a distinct lack of restaurants open in the evening nearby where we were. I'd choose to stay somewhere more livelier in future.

For the six nights I'd stay where you were planning on staying. NYC hotel room rates have been historically on the expensive side as well due to overall demand. People do visit there from all over the world.

NYC Subway is somewhat run down and needs a lot of investment in it for both tracks and trains.

That whole area around Wall Street is extremely quiet on the weekends and in the evenings so would not readily choose to stay in that area. As another poster has written there are not many restaurants open there either.
