Sevenoaks would be a good base for visiting National Trust places. The Canterbury area is also lovely and easy to get to coastal towns from there. I also recommend staying in Whitstable for beach walks, independent shops and pubs.

I second Whitstable - nice shops and places to eat. And close enough to visit Canterbury.

Sandwich is an option if you find public transport useful - trains in three directions (I think) - round the Thanet coast to Whitstable - south to Deal, Folkestone - west to Canterbury. Deal, Rye, Tenterden all lovely.

Canterbury has plenty of tea rooms. Or Broadstairs if you prefer coast. There's the cathedral and plenty of castles around East Kent to visit, and walks around the coast, the North Downs Way, or other routes.

East Kent has good public transport, buses and trains (assuming no strikes), so you can go out walking and not have to worry about parking or getting back to where you left the car.

Hever Castle, home of Anne Boleyn is well worth a visit. Not been for many years but still plan to visit again one day. Tunbridge Wells is a lovely town, Bewl Water was good if you like watersports. I was always a little disappointed with the beach towns, but liked Cliftonville near Margate. Lewes is lovely too, with an interesting history.
