Travelling with sports equipment - help!

Trying to book a long haul flight and need to take a suitcase as well as a cricket bag/equipment. Booking online I can't seem to find useful info as to how to do this - looked on various flight websites. Chatted to lots of bots and got nowhere.
Anyone know what to do? Will it count as oversize luggage? Do I just book 2 checked bags in and then email them? I'm going round in circles. Longshot that someone might know.
Currently looking at booking with Opodo, but you can't get past the gatekeeper of their customer service phone line without a booking ref!

Don’t use such a company but book direct with the airline in question instead. You can then ask them about the cricket equipment you’re taking with you.

I agree, book direct with the airline (cuts out the middle man if anyone goes wrong too), and there should be an option to add luggage / sports equipment.
