Pompeii

DH and I are going travelling around Italy next month, aware there will be lots of things we need to book well in advance.

Anyone been to Pompeii who can advise if we need tickets booked beforehand or whether we can simply journey there and pay on the day?

Hi
We went a few months ago. Booked in advance (whilst we were in Italy) booked through Ticket one.
Kids free and adults 14.50
Then made our own way by train
Think you could buy outside(with guides)

I’ve been in the middle of the August holidays in Italy, and managed to get tickets at the door (after a 20-30min wait). I’m sure in off-season it would be much faster. That was a couple of years ago but I doubt it has changed.

Pompei so wonderful definitely you need a guide I think we just got one at the entrance. Get your kids to learn the bastille song about pompei! My v theatrical niece and her friend sang it in the amphitheatre with the direction of our guide absolutely magical

I was there a few weeks ago. Queued up to pay in on the day. Was only waiting about 20min and it was very busy but not long waiting at all.

A good tip given to us last month by our hotel was to visit in the afternoon to avoid the worst of the crowds. It can be uncomfortably hot as there is no shade so good idea to take sun hats and water. The site is huge, much bigger area than I had anticipated. Well worth a visit, though. I love Italy.

Just back from Italy. Turn up and pay on day. Absolutely no issues at all!

I would recommend you visit Herculaneum too as the buildings are much better preserved, although a much smaller site than Pompeii. I am glad that I saw both.

They are both easy to get to by train or by bus from Naples independently, so there is no need to book a tour and have time restrictions or added expense.

I booked in advance as I was staying in Rome and the tour included the coach from there. We had an excellent guide. It was summer though and 36 degrees so I didn't make it far up Mt Vesuvius!
