My teenage son and I want to spend 5-7 days in the French Alps at the end of August. Can anyone recommend a nice resort that we can get to by train easily? I know That St Maurice is easy to get to but was wondering if there is anywhere else from which we can do nice walks?

Tignes has put a lot of effort into summer and was one of the first resorts to really establish themselves as a viable option for a summer holiday. There are a huge number of trails leading out from Tignes. One of my favourites is the hike over to Val d’isere for some stunning views of the whole valley and Lac de Chervil below. Part of the GR5 goes through Tignes so if your up for something a bit more challenging the part of the trail that starts in Tignes would be an option. La Plagne would also be a good base en.la-plagne.com/explore-the-multitude-of-activities-on-offer/dive-into-the-heart-of-summer/hiking

Have a look at Peak Retreats. They do lots of summer resorts. St Gervais has lots of summer activities and is near the railway line. Or you could get a train to Annecy and get a bus from there to la clusaz.

Tignes is a long trek even for skiers TBH. Sure there are much closer places to go. I would say look at a resort like St Martin de Belleville, think you can get a bus or taxi up from Moutiers which has a good train station.Lovely French village with markets and restaurants in summer season. I would check anywhere you go what's likely to be open very end of August because a lot of mountain restaurants in particular will close in the off season.
