Calais Hypermarket Trip

Thinking of popping over to a French hyper market. Anyone done this recently? Which is the best to go to? Not going for anything particular, just some red wine, French beers, olive oil, snacks and bits

Remember to check the post Brexit allowances. It's much more limited than it used to be as to what you can bring back.

Thanks. We will be under as not going to bulk buy. We are popping in on the way to Boulogne, but thanks for the heads up.

The Cite Europe Carrefour is overpriced compared to hypermarkets a little further out. You may as well get the things you need in one of the Boulogne hypermarkets.

Thé Auchan is good.

If you're heading to Boulogne try the Le Clerc there. Good selection of wines and a fabulous bakery. I tend to start at Auchan in Coquelles but also stop by Carrefour for specific items like their water aerosols which are so useful in this heat!

Also, if you like SW French wines, go to Le Chais in rue des 2 ponts in Boulogne. Closed Mondays and for lunch, but really good wines. Many years ago, bought a red for 40p and it was lovely. If it's the same bloke, he has a wonderful waxed moustache. Sticks out about 4" on each side, twisted into 2 spokes.

Have found Auchan at St Martin de Boulogne really good. Don't forget the smoked garlic, and the poivre d'âne cheese, shaped like a pear and covered in paprika.

There aren't any rules about what you can bring into the UK - UK government hasn't sorted that out yet.

basilmint · 25/08/2022 00:08

Sorry, ignore me, I thought you were talking about specific items rather than allowances for how much!

Oh i loved these trips.
Don't forget the French butter.

My must buy is Bonne Maman jam - £2.50 over here- €1.15 in France and you can get the peach one. Bucatini No 9 pasta- a thick spaghetti with a hollow middle to soak up sauce.

Second vote for Auchan Coquelles. Cheaper than the Carrefour in Cite Europe.
