Hotel recommendations in Playa del Carmen, Mexico

We have flights booked for Christmas. We currently have hotel accommodation in one of the Barcelo hotels but want to make sure this is the right hotel for us as it’s a special family holiday.

We don’t like huge sprawling hotels, people everywhere, loud entertainment etc. Ideally we would like a smaller quieter hotel but with good swimming pools and food choices.

Any recommendations please? We have older dc aged 21, 19 and 15.
