7 nights in Mexico... too short?

Quirkyme · 15/08/2022 23:08

Hello, thinking of celebrating my 30th in Mexico in March...

I was originally planning/thinking 7 nights - 4 nights in Cancun, 3 in Tulum...
But I've been told that "it'll be a waste to go to Mexico for just 7 nights"...

Do you agree? I don't mind staying longer at all, so would 10 days perhaps be better?

If you're in the UK it's a 10 hour flight which I wouldn't do for only a week. The journey is a slog so I'd want to make it worth coming

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/08/2022 23:11

I would personally go for 10/14 nights. But that's because I just got back from a fortnight in Playa del Carmen and loved it! It is a long way to go so you might as well make the most of it.

FitFat · 15/08/2022 23:11

You are travelling half way across the world, unless you have budget or time restraints why would you not explore and make sure you have time settle, get bearings, ward of jetlag etc. I realise I am coming acrss as rude but I am wondering why you cant figure this out yourself. Perhaps I am missing something!

CyrilBasket · 15/08/2022 23:12

We've just returned. I have previously done a week but it was over before it started. This time we did 10. I wish we'd booked 14. It's beautiful!

I think you're right tbh, I think 10 days + is ideal.
Yes quite a few people have mentioned Playa del Carmen, and that I should go there on my way to Tulum possibly...

Aww sounds lush. Any recommendations???

I've been here 2 weeks and still can't face that journey home yet

GetOffTheTableMabel · 15/08/2022 23:19

I went for 7 days and really enjoyed it but it’s a long flight and I think that without a comfortable sleep in business class it would have felt too tiring a journey for one week. Absolutely no bother if you can run to business class flight though.

JobQuandree · 15/08/2022 23:22

I've been for 7 nights a couple of times just due to holiday restrictions with work etc. I'd go again for 7 nights tbh, it's worth the journey, 10.30am flight out of Manchester then it's an overnight one back in. Obvs 10-14 nights is better! I've stayed at a few hotels my absolute fave was Riu Playacar just 20 mins walk from plays del Carmen.

calmlakes · 15/08/2022 23:25

I much prefer Tulum to Playa del Carmen for what it is worth OP.

Although they are pretty close to each other with plenty of opportunities to take trips.

Visited again last month. Enjoy.

Xyzzzzz · 15/08/2022 23:25

I went for 7 wish I did 10. Was so lovely

Hey, yes I'm really excited about Tulum! It is so beautiful!

Any recommendations or suggestions? All appreciated 🤍

How many nights would you recommend staying there? I was planning to split and stay in Cancun some days and Tulum the other days. Or maybe just Tulum hmm, decisions.

Did you spend all your time in Tulum in your last visit ?

Also, interested to hear why you prefer to Tulum to Playa del C ?

Hope you don't mind all the Qs x

I may check out the hotel you mentioned , thank you x

We went to puerto Morelos in November

the flight was long for me and I really felt it this time
done similar fight lengths and also 12 hours to South Africa but that one really hit me

I couldn’t do a week I need a week just to get over the carnage at cancun airport 😂

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/08/2022 23:31

If I went again I'd stay at Tulum or on Cozumel. Both amazing, beautiful places and quieter than Playa del Carmen, which was lovely as a base but we did feel like everywhere we turned someone was trying to get money out of us. It's really changed in the last few years.

This is useful, thank you. Yes Cozumel was mentioned too... so I guess Cozumel is a place I'd explore on my way to Tulum?

We're in the Riu tequila just opposite right now the area is lovely and you can use 3 hotels all within 2 minutes walk.

PDC is fab and it's not far from here we've been into town a couple of times

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/08/2022 23:40

You can get the ferry to Cozumel and stay a night or two, it's beautiful.

I loved the Riu Tequila, we have stayed there in the past. This year we stayed at Grand Riviera Princess. Amazing hotel but a bit remote/cut off so difficult to source cheaper excursions etc.

This sounds lovely. Okay I'll put this on my list to research - I like the sound of this.

Maybe it'll be Cancun x Cozumel x Tulum!

We've just had three weeks at the Tequila, out second time there.
It's fab isn't it?
OP I'd definitely do more than a week, there is so much to do and explore but you need down time in the heat too.
I know you didn't ask but if budget allows Cirque du Soleil and Xcaret are an absolute must from Cancun.
Cozumel is stunning and there's a fantastic submarine excursion there.
Tulum didn't look all that much to me but we only visited the ruins so I can't really say.
PDC is a great base I think.

Quirkyme · 15/08/2022 23:48

Would you ladies recommend that I do all-inclusive packages if I'm going to be staying at 2 possibly 3 hotels/accommodations?

I enquired about Cancun and Tulum today in a package , and it was quite a good offering... but going to continue to research though and compare

I've heard about Xcaret too haha! I'm going to be doing lots of research the next few days and weeks!

And where would you recommend I spend on my bday itself? I was thinking a Yacht day trip from Cancun to Isla Mujeres...

Open to suggestions

I actually stayed at the Fairmont, Mayakoba. Which is between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
It is lovely but very quiet.

We always rent a car but it is easy to get excursions, we saw lots of people doing this.

Tulum is quite small, with a slight hippy vibe.
Playa is quite full on tourist tat, very busy.
We did a day in both.
If you prefer bigger, buzzier places then you might prefer Playa, slightly more chilled Tulum.

Try and take a trip to a Cenote, despite living in Mexico for a few years this was the first time we had visited one and we really liked it.

Hey, yes I really like the hippy chilled vibes of Tulum... (what I've seen of it)

Can I ask how you saw people signing up for excursions? I'm thinking to sort most of mine online...

Yes deffo plan to swim in cenotes in Tulum!

We're just starting our 3rd week too.
Trying to book xcaret online direct with them
But it won't accept my card or PayPal.

We're thinking of getting a taxi there and hopefully we can pay at the gate
