Scared of flying. Any tips?

Over the years I've become increasingly scared of flying. Have been to Canada, Idonesia, India in the past, with absolutely no probs. since having kids, the fear has set in and got worse and worse, to the point where I really avoid flying at any cost (we're driving to austria for this year's hols). would love to be able to feel better about this. have tried hynosis for othr things, which hasn't worked, so don't hold out much hope for that. could anyone suggest good books or good drugs , anything really, as i'd love to be able to go to interesting places again. feel that i'm holding dp back with my reluctance. went to paris last year, and just came into land, and had to take off again. i was slighly hysterical and don't ever want to feel like that again! any suggestions at all much appreicated

Will also be keen to hear others tips for flying. I am due to visit the outlaws in NZ this year and I am already having sleepless nights thinking about the prospect of being 'up there' for nearly 30hrs.

Added to my increasing fear of flying it will also be my DS first trip on a plane. I really do not want him to inherit my irrational fear so any tips will be greatly appreciated.

it's horrible, isn't it? my outlaws are in australia, and we've never been to visit (ds is now 5) because of my fear. would love to be able to just go and not worry about it. if we fly for 1 or 2 hours I think I could probably drink enough wine to keep me calm, but 30 hours, i don't think so!

Think about your favorite things, bring your favorite food, book, etc. I have flown with Lao Airlines and they have a very bad reputation for, um, I won't mention it. Anyway, I was terrified to get on the plane. I tried to sleep through most of the flight and I bought a box of biscuits with me. I found the comforting biscuits took my mind of the plane.

Try to breathe deeply and stay calm. If you enjoy reading, take a funny book with you. Laughter is the best medicine for relaxing.

If you fly to Asia, try and avoid Lao, Phuket and Bangladesh airlines, also Adam Air. The rest are ok.
