Slovenia mountains - where to base ourselves?

We want to go to Slovenia for a week and do mostly mountains, lakes, walking, cycling, water activities, maybe also a trip to the caves. Where is best to base ourselves or is it best to stay in 2 / 3 places and travel around? Any experience? We will have a car. With DC 11.

We're just on our way home from 2 weeks in Slovenia.
We had 5 night on lake bohinj (waterfall walk, cable car and hike down, kayak, day trip to lake bled (by bus) and lake swimming every day).
2 nights in Ljubljana and 3 in Piran. You could do the caves as a day from Ljubljana or en route to the coast.
Most places had park and ride shuttle buses. Apparently parking is expensive.
Bovec area would be a good addition for outdoor activities - rafting kayaking etc.
We've had a great time, enjoy!

We are thinking of booking for next year. Our plan is 2 nights in Ljubljana, 6-7 nights in either bled or bohinj, then 4-5 nights in piran

Has anyone ant campsite recommendations? We'd like to tale our campervan there some day

We stayed at the Hotel Skipass in Kranjska Gora which was great. Fab location for “doing” the mountains and Lake Jasna as everything is just a short drive away.

We then shifted to Bled and were there for the festival of light when thousands of tea lights are launched onto the lake (and then retrieved by divers the next day). Really cool. Camping Bled is the best campsite - right on the lake. We stayed at Vila Bled but it was ££££.

Agree with doing the caves and castle as a day trip from Ljubljana. The tourist information centre has loads of trips bootable through them.

Slovenia really blew me away. Such a beautiful country.

Few years back but we stayed near Lake Bohinj - lake swimming, cable car then walk up Mt Vogel, other good walks too. Then we put the car on a train through the pass and stayed near Bovec, which had lots of the outfits that organise rafting and canyoning. And then a third place - sorry I can't remember where - but near the WW1 field hospital in the mountains. And we started with a few days in Ljubljana.

I would travel around - it is a beautiful country and the fun/interesting things to do are spread out. Our dc were a similar age to yours and we had great fun - tourism was efficient, friendly and family-friendly, and pleasantly low-key.

@Laska2Meryls
Camp bohinj is in a fab location. It was pretty packed 10 days ago, but it works. We stayed in their vans which are bookable, everything else is just turn-up-on-the-day.
