I know New York travelers tend to mean New York City, but I thought I'd share something I ran across about the lovely little towns just upstate.

The 10 Most Charming Towns in New York's Catskills

Wasn't that where Dirty Dancing was supposed to be?

MsAmerica · 24/07/2022 01:58

Well, you got me to look it up. Yes, you're right about Dirty Dancing. There is a town called Catskill, but "the" Catskills refers to a mountain area where there used to be a lot of summer resorts.

If you can promise me dancing lessons from a Patrick lookalike, I'm there.

Only if you carry a watermelon.

The family goes to a Catskills resort in the Marvellous Mrs Maisel too. Wonder if those sort of places are still popular.

You don't have to go upstate as far as the Catskills. There are some lovely places to visit in the Hudson Valley such as Cold Spring and Beacon. All easily accessible on a train from Grand Central, taking approx 1.5 hours. It's a beautiful scenic train ride alongside the Hudson river for much of the journey too.

I got the train up to Cold Spring this past Feb for a day trip. It was blissful!

Correct, but the point was, there's this tidy article which sums up several places that people may not have heard of.

Yes I know it's correct. You're not a teacher marking my homework. 🙄And my point was that you don't have to go as far as the Catskills. Which people may not be aware of.

Thanks for sharing, this is really useful. I've been to NYC a few times and travelled a bit in NY and NJ but hadn't heard of these places. 🙏

I would love to take two weeks touring New York state in October - every time I go nobody else wants to do it. All I've seen outside the city is the shopping outlets Hmm.

It would be gorgeous then. People go for "leaf-peeping" when the leaves turn.

Ooh thanks for this - will look into these places when we visit NYC. It would be lovely to get out of the city for a day ☺️

TizerorFizz · 22/08/2022 18:18

I’m obviously more resourceful than the standard person regarding NY state then! There’s a whole world waiting to be discovered…………

The Catskills may be a little far north for a day-trip, but there are some nice little towns a bit further south - and for me, I've always wanted to go eat at the Culinary Institute of America, which is near Poughkeepie.

Lovely. I’ve visited a few towns up there and they were great.

I also spent a few days visiting family in Cold Spring and loved it there. And so close to nyc.
