Anyone on codeine from their gp and took it abroad into Mexico? I’m so worried about it even though I contacted the embassy and they said it’s fine I just need a letter from
my gp in Spanish which I have but I’m so scared still

Can’t see why it would be a problem anywhere but definitely not in Mexico where far friskier meds are routinely prescribed.

What are you scared of?

AnnaMagnani · 23/07/2022 08:46

No experience of Mexico but I deal with patients taking far far stronger drugs than codeine into all sorts of countries.

Never had a patient have a problem and usually just the prescription slip is enough without needing a signed letter.

Jalisco · 23/07/2022 09:50

I have never even had my much stronger drugs noticed, never mind questioned.

Sistedtwister · 23/07/2022 09:55

Taken codeine to loads of different countries and only been questioned once (in the uk) I simply logged onto the surgeries repeat prescription app and showed them my status. No further issues.

Iv never took any meds abroad so it’s just got me on edge. To be honest I’m scared about the whole trip! Flying over the Bermuda Triangle, what if a hurricane comes! What if there is an attack over there and I don’t make it home. I’m just so on edge I should be super excited

My husband and I had the most amazing time in Mexico in May for our honeymoon. I took zapain with me and he took tramadol, no issues at all. I vape and I was concerned about getting that in but again no issues, the only thing is fruit which is standard for most , a sniffer dog located some woman's banana , very pleasant culture and I can't wait to return , go and have the best time!

Coyoacan · 23/07/2022 20:08

Just to clarify, vaping has just been banned here in Mexico

PinkBump2022 · 24/07/2022 11:32

@smine1 did they stop and check your bags once you reached Mexico? Did you just take the box with the sticker on with your name and address on? Did you take the exact amount you would need or more incase if delays?

@PinkBump2022 I took a loose packet in my hand luggage incase I needed them , I packed the prescription box in my suitcase with the remaining.. that obviously had my name on the label. We wasn't stopped. But honestly I wouldn't worry the pharmacy's there sell everything and anything and are very knowledgable.

PinkBump2022 · 24/07/2022 15:53

@smine1 thank you I’m so worried about being stopped and being arrested Iv no idea why lol!! So I should take one days worth in my hand luggage and the rest in my case? Did security in the U.K. say anything when you had a loose packet?

if you need the medication carry it all in your hand luggage

TeacupDrama · 24/07/2022 16:28

there are some countries where codeine based medicine is illegal even on prescription Greece Indonesia UAE and Japan being some of them
you need to check but it didn't come up in a quick google

smine1 · 24/07/2022 17:55

@PinkBump2022 codiene is fine to take into Mexico , I had mine in my hand luggage, I never put them in the plastic bag thing as it wasn't a liquid, Mexico and uk never said anything when it went through bag control .. I had my deodorant taken off me at Mexico coming home that was it, and they went through mine because of the deodorant flagged up , my error I just bunged it in after my shower in the guest room as it was a later flight home...

Try not to worry op. Flying over the Bermuda Triangle is nothing to worry about. It's still quite early in the season for hurricanes, there are usually more toward September as the oceans are warmer. Check out the NOAA website for tropical storms, none of any note at present. They form out at sea in the Pacific and the Atlantic Mexico has plenty of time to prepare. Attacks on tourists are very unlikely, there is a lot of violence between gangs and cartels in some parts of Mexico but less so in tourist areas and you would be very unlucky to get caught up in it, especially if you aren't there for the drugs. Unlike lots of North African countries where tourists are the target for terrorist groups. Enjoy your holiday!
