Jet2 - buying extra 22kg luggage allowance

Family of 4 going on hols next week. Cases have always averaged out at less than 22kg each in the past (usually a couple of cases over; a couple of cases under weight), but our girls now late teens and worrying this might no longer be the case! If we pay for one additional 22kg case (£56 return) could that allowance be shared across our original 4 cases (as long as none weigh over 32kgs) or does it have to be an actual extra case? Hope that makes sense!

Order a suitcase weight from Argos or Amazon. 22kg is a good allowed even for 2 weeks. Do you have hand luggage also?

lanbro · 22/07/2022 18:43

Wow, we usually just take 2 cases for 4 of us, both under 22kg even though we have 22kg each! I'd police what your girls are taking tbh, 5 cases for 4 people is ridiculous especially if it's a hot beach type holiday

rookiemere · 22/07/2022 18:44

You can also bring up to 10kg in the cabin I think - I'd buy a couple of cabin sized bags and get them to put any extra in that.

Halfarsedjingler · 22/07/2022 18:48

How can you need more than 88kg of luggage for 4 people? Like others have said I would use hang luggage if need be.

PlanetNormal · 22/07/2022 18:50

It will need to be an additional bag. The 22kg limit with £10/kg for exceeding is applied because baggage handlers have to lug the bags around.

Also, if you’re flying with Jet2 I assume you will be going to Europe, so I can’t imagine why you would even want to pay more to lug that much stuff with you. You can buy toiletries, OTC medicines, sun cream, flip flops etc etc at a local supermarket.

We've taken diving equipment on a Jet2 package holiday, so have bought a third case and taken 2 large diving bags that weigh around 28 kilos each, but if it's just for clothes and toiletries etc, I don't understand why you'd need to.

You can take an insane amount of luggage on a Jet2 package holiday - 22 kg per person hold bag, 10 kilo cabin case with the largest size available of all the budget airlines and a large handbag/rucksack.

Most people wouldn't need anywhere near that amount, so you should have loads within the standard allowance, especially as you say you normally use less than the allowance so have some spare.

Given that you also get 10kg for hand luggage each do you really think you’ll need more than 32kg each?! That’s a bit bonkers to be honest. Get a luggage scales and tell them to pack within the limit!

4 of us just returned from holiday. We took 49kg of hold luggage which included a pushchair, nappies, formula, baby food and clothes for 2 adults and 2 children for a week plus everything else (we didn't need to buy a single thing on holiday). We had a 66kg allowance for luggage plus we were allowed the pushchair extra. Got nowhere near it. Just get everyone to pile up all the stuff they want to take, and split it evenly between 4 cases and weigh each as you pack it.

milkysmum · 23/07/2022 09:40

How could you possibly need more than 22kg each?

Frazzled2207 · 23/07/2022 09:55

Wow. The four of us went on a jet 2 holiday recently and I remember realising how generous the allowance is, especially when you consider 10kg cabin baggage. All four of ours came to about 45kg.

I’d be telling my daughters that they had to make sure their luggage was within the guidelines tbh.

PMAmostofthetime · 23/07/2022 09:58

@elizaco we are always over like you,
I'd call the airline some allow it some don't.
But if you call it will be noted on your booking form.

For all those saying, why are you taking so much OP has explained in her post and that's not the question they asked!

Notthisnotthat · 23/07/2022 10:00

We just flew Jet2 with 3 bags for 4 of us, One bag was 23kg, one was 19kg and 1 was 11kg, the overweight one just got a heavy label stuck on it and the check in assistant said it was fine as we weren't over the total amount we had paid for. This was flying out of Glasgow.

Fatballs · 23/07/2022 11:28

Most people wouldn't need anywhere near that amount

Ha ha! We obviously aren’t most people. We usually use every gram.

Omg no way. Me and DS take our own cases each (he's 7) and both are filled to the brim. 20kg each! Plus 1 piece of hand luggage.
