Refund for a cancelled flight

Ganymedemoon · 19/07/2022 21:02

KLM have cancelled our flights for next month. We booked via last minute. Now just waiting on a refund.

I know loads of flights have been cancelled recently, anyone else received a refund? How long did you have to wait?

Has no one really had a flight cancelled? Anyone? I rebooked with another airline on Sunday and now that's been cancelled!

Easyjet flight cancelled refund within 48hours I think. We also got compensation (because cancelled at the boarding gate)

My flight to mexico was cancelled - the first leg. No one even told me and its next week. My travel agent tried to fob me off with accepting a refund but from researching I found they had to give me a similar fligjt within two hours of original on any airline and I am due compensation. Dont let them fob you off

Can I just check my understanding of what you mean by:

"I found they had to give me a similar fligjt within two hours of original on any airline and I am due compensation."

I take it you mean in your case they couldn't come up with something a "similar flight" within the two hour window, often something impossible to do, especially in the case of Long Haul destinations, and so you are due compensation?

BeccaBean · 20/07/2022 16:44

Our Easyjet flight was cancelled at short notice. We received our refund in 48 hours and then our compensation 27 days after applying.

Clariana · 20/07/2022 16:47

I had a KLM flight cancelled in late May just as I was about to leave for the airport, they sent an email 13th June saying they would refund....still waiting, if anyone has any tips how to get it I would be grateful!

ChaToilLeam · 20/07/2022 18:22

The last time i needed a refund from KLM they did it very quickly: was done within two weeks. Get back on to them if you’re still waiting and if not happy, put in a query via Twitter - that tends to get speedy results.

ChaToilLeam · 20/07/2022 18:23

Also, I always book with a credit card because that gives extra backup if the airline is messing about.

disconnecteddrifter · 20/07/2022 18:56

No they tried to just give me a refund, then refund and compensation but eventually they rebooked me on a flight. The new flight has more stops and so is a pain but they threw in baggage for free. It would have cost them over 2k more to get me on a similar flight so cheaper for them. But you know, taking my money and not informing me of cancellation was pretty crap.

Figgygal · 20/07/2022 18:57

Easyjet are fuckers when it comes to compensation but had refund within 4 days

Ganymedemoon · 20/07/2022 19:21

I'm now waiting on 2 refunds now. One from KLM, one from BA. Cannot believe BA cancelled 3 days after booking! Surely they should have known this flight wasn't happening on Sunday?

I'm giving them both 7 working days then will chase then will go to bank to claim it. So bloody frustrating! Am booking a ferry next!

We recently had a longhaul business class direct flight cancelled. Found out two days before when we went to check in and couldn't find the email with the code. The travel agent said there was an error but I think they screwed up.

They got us an alternative business class flight on a lesser airline which left 12 hours later and had a 5 hour stop over. We got to our destination a day later than planned.

What compensation may we be entitled to?

It’s not clear from your post - was the flight cancelled by the airline, or the travel agent managed to have your booking cancelled?

If the former, you’ll have to check if you’re covered by EU261 - it’s only valid if your flight departed or arrived into a country that’s part of the agreement.

BuwchGochGota · 20/07/2022 19:31

I had a flight booked with Ryanair through lastminute cancelled last month. The refund notification came through pretty quickly (2-3 days) and I had a choice of ways to refund - straight cash back to my account or a voucher for another trip which had a bonus amount added to it as I wasn't just taking the money. I went for the voucher as I knew I wanted to book another trip straight away.

Not necessarily, they are trying to avoid cancellations < 14 days but they are not always managing it, and sometimes the cancellations are for legit reasons and happening within a week of departure.

We got this email from the booking agent

This is to inform you that we are having an inventory issue in some flights of XXXXX for the month of July. Due to this error GDS global distribution system is not allowing us to proceed the final issuance of your ticket, Hence we have arranged best available alternate flights. Which can be proceed for the issuance.

This is on the travel agent then. It’s likely they oversold seats - more than they had purchased from the airline - and then had to take some back and rearrange trips.

So it’s not the airline’s fault as it sounds as though the plane itself did take off. You’ll have to chase it up with your agent. I have amazing travel insurance and not even they would cover this kind of error, let alone a standard policy.

This is why I only ever book direct nowadays.

TikTokCat · 21/07/2022 17:48

That's what I thought Grandslam. It's so annoying as we ended up with a day less of our holiday and very tired from an extra 8 hours travel time.

We will see what we can do when we get back.

Ganymedemoon · 26/07/2022 12:20

So my second flight is been dealt with sooner but I am not happy! 3 options.

  1. travel credit with an extra £10
  2. travel voucher
  3. refund of £138 ( flights cost £248)!! This includes an £104 handling fee.

This has to be a joke right??

OP posts:
GrandSlamFinalee · 26/07/2022 13:10

That sounds terrible. Unfortunately there’s no legislation that you can confront them with… Only book direct with the airline in the future.

Did your long haul business class really cost £248 though?

Maybe you're mixing me up. This was a one way flight cattle class back from a European city.

Well I have been on the phone, apparently T&Cs state £35 pp handling fee which is a joke! I have had another look and still cannot find the fee laid out clearly. It states there is a fee but the directs you to another part of T&C where there is nothing. So on the back that the T&Cs are not very obvious, or clearly stated I have written to customer care and will see what they say.

Our one way British Airways flight between two uk cities was cancelled. We were due to board the flight in September. We've arranged alternative transport.

We hope that our outbound UK flight to our destination will go ahead as it's on a local airline/BA codeshare. Same deal coming back.

We contacted B.A. to delete the cancelled flight from our itinerary as doing it ourselves only gave us the option of cancelling all the flights.

We won't be able to claim our refund for the cancelled flight until after we have taken the return flight in September. That does not make any sense to me but it's what we've been advised by B.A. in writing by a chat bot person. Yes I have the transcript.

Not sure if we can claim compensation for the cancelled flight as we have been advised in plenty of time. (Unlike some travellers.)

Oh I’m sorry, I did confuse you with the previous poster, I apologise.

Still terrible! Was the cancellation more than 14 days before the flight?

Charmanderchick · 01/10/2022 13:37

Can I ask if you ever got anywhere with your refund from klm/agents? I’ve just had my flight cancelled by klm with 15 days notice so no compensation. Apparently they can take up to 30 working days to refund leaving you completely in the lurch money wise.

Hoppinggreen · 01/10/2022 13:41

EasyJet cancelled our flights last July with just over 2 weeks to go so no compensation due. Had the money back within 48 hours
Cost me an extra £800 to get new flights
In July 2020 I had flights cancelled by Ryanair - getting a refund from them was painful
