Extra charges booking.com

My dp and I decided to book a last minute break through booking.com.

There's 4 kids so it's easier to book a holiday house which we have done for 4 nights. The house is advertised as hot tub/ sauna / bbq / pet friendly.

We paid £2000 for 4 nights which is the top end of our budget.

The holiday home owner has just contacted us and has asked for £50 each for our dogs, and £100 for the use of the bbq. Also, a refundable damage deposit of £800.

Non of these extra charges were mentioned on booking.com so now we're wondering whether to cancel. Wwyd?

This sounds dodgy to me. There is a facility on booking.com to list extra charges, e.g. partner.booking.com/en-gb/help/policies-payments/guest-payments/how-can-i-set-damage-deposit

Are there any that you can find if you click on every possible thing around the booking within your dashboard, especially 'policies' (where it shows your dates and booking?) This should also go with info on how and when the deposit (particularly) should be returned - or what leg would you have to stand on if the letter kept it for minor reasons?

If you do go with this, take copious photos of condition on entry and on leaving and return every item to exactly where it was on entry.

Contact booking.com. when I've had issues before they've been great in resolving.

Thank you for replies, we will have a thorough look through all our booking information and then get in touch with booking.com

We contacted booking.com and they showed us on the advert where it says there is extra charges for dogs and the bbq. You had to click through lots of links to get to the information.

It's an absolute squiz that they are able to hide the charges, it should be 100 % transparent when booking. Booking.com wouldn't issue a refund so we're paying out an extra £150 for dogs and £800 being transfered to the owner, no contract or security that we will get it back.

We opted out of using the bbq.

Do take lots of photos (getting in and getting out) so you have evidence of how you left the place. It sounds OTT but once had a deposit retained due to 'deep grooves on the dining table' and a non-emptied bin - bag was tied up but there was no indication where rubbish should have been taken for disposal as the system for rubbish was not like the usual UK one. There was nothing at all that we had done with the dining table that would have damaged it, and I don't recall even noticing the grooves. They might have been there, no idea, but we paid the price for another holidaymaker's actions.
