Pompeii is usually just a day trip from the Amalfi coast/Sorrento area or a longer day trip from Rome. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to be there longer than a day.

I agree with above poster, find somewhere lovely on the coast and have a day trip (we did it by train). Sorrento is lovely.

It is easy to access along the Circumvesuviana trains or by bus along the Neapolitan coast. Herculaneum is just a few stops further towards Naples, more compact and well preserved.

Also going to recommend Sorrento. Lovely town and easy to get to all the main sites by train. Herculaneum highly recommended, more so than Pompeii.

When we did it, we stayed in Naples and did a day trip. We then went to the Amalfi Coast, so agree with PP re staying on the coast and doing a day trip

We’ve stayed in Pompeii quite a few times. Would recommend Hotel Forum, in the centre and Bosco D’Medici which is a bit further to walk to get into the town part. Some lovely restaurants too and good access to the trains.

We did it recently and stayed in Sorrento which had lovely restaurants and a lovely atmosphere. Took the train very cheaply to Pompeii for a day and did a boat trip around the Amalfi Coast. I wouldn't stay in Pompeii. The other option considering its October would be Naples where there would be lots to see and an easy train ride out.

I would stay in Naples in October. Better choice of things to do. Read the Mary Beard book on Pompeii before you do.,You’ll get more out of your visit.

Sorrento was perfect for Pompeii . We used the train to get to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Then the bus to do the Amalfi coast . Boat to Capri and Ischia too . Naples easy on the train too . Lots of lovely restaurants etc for evenings and generally just a beautiful town .

We stayed in Pompei in a lovely hotel. Herculaneum one day which we got to on the train, the next day took a jeep tour up Vesuvius. And then Pompei .Actually ran out of time, could have done a full day at Pompei. Then we went to the amalfi coast for a week.
