Crete in August

Hi,

Looking for advice, thinking of going to Crete for 10 days at the end of next month. Never been so no idea where best to stay (not Malia though, clubbing days are long behind us). DH wants somewhere with culture and a beach, I want somewhere with good transport links and not too quiet in the evenings.
Also I'll be about 16 weeks pregnant when we go, will I cope with the heat or am I better to go somewhere cooler?

I'm in love with Crete.

We stayed in a villa in a village called Vamos, in the Chania region. It was a 15 minute drive from the coast but we liked the contrast.

It was August when we went but I did my find it unbearable...as long as you're near a pool you will be fine. Plus, you'll find it cooler in the mountains.

Sightseeing wise, if you hire a car there is plenty to see. Chania town is perfect for walks and beautiful restaurants, although parking is a nightmare.

You'll not be disappointed.

Rethymnon is lovely and would tick all your boxes OP. The buses are all air conditioned which might be a welcome break if you wanted to explore a bit too.

We went to Crete last month and completely fell in love with it. We stayed in Chania town on Nea Chora beach. It was 10-15 mins walk to the old town and Venetian Port. We loved having pool, sandy beach, multiple restaurants on our doorstep but the old town near by. It was hot but a nice sea breeze the whole time.

For me, it would be too hot. Sightseeing wouldn’t be pleasant for the culture side of the holiday. Do you need to go in the school holidays? What’s the flight status like then? Some holiday companies have been told to stop selling holidays they cannot fulfill. I would therefore be careful about any booking. Presumably nice places are booked up? I think we no longer have the EU health card so you need to be clear about insurance too. I would go closer to home!

Pre-covid, we were regulars in the Venetian Harbour hotel. Taxi to/from the airport, Charnia has lots to explore on foot.

To explore further afield we would have a hire car delivered to the hotel.

Never been in August, though, as I do not enjoy the heat.

Oh DH reminded me the hotel is actually called the Porto Venetia

Unfortunately my husband's holidays are dictated by his work so last two weeks in August is only time we can go, were Scottish so it's not even our school holidays then anymore but I know it'll be busy with English school holidays.
This will probably be our last chance for a holiday abroad for a few years with the baby so not looking for somewhere closer to home, we're set on Crete.
Chania and Rethymnon are the two I'd heard would be best so will look into these. I know things are pretty booked up but hopefully we'll still find somewhere decent to stay

Crete in August at 4 months pregnant would be too hot for me to go around and look at ruins and take part in cultural events. Fine for sitting around the pool, swimming and reading and book with your feed dangling in the pool.

crete in october for honeymoon.

Perfect.

Our first holiday together was to Crete end Sept early Oct. It was simply perfect. Hope yours goes well too.

What about the south west of the island. Drive south from Chania, if that’s where you fly to, to eg Paleochora, Sfakia, Loutro, or around there. It’s a great drive over the mountains. www.amazingcrete.com/loutro-village-south-coast This might give you some ideas. It’s a very big island, lots of lovely places to base yourself in.
