tour operator for solo holidays

Hi All,
I'm thinking of taking a holiday, by myself, which is an exciting thought. Probably to Asia.

I'm after something in a small group, definitely no room sharing, ideally everyone else on the trip wouldn't be couples.

Can anyone recommend a tour operator? Or any to avoid?

Exodus

I've travelled solo with Intrepid several times and highly recommend them. You can pay extra to not share a room, and each time there has been a really good mix of solo travellers and couples.

Whataretheodds · 16/07/2022 18:15

How old are you and what kind of vibe are you looking for?

Exodus and intrepid are good, you could also look at g adventures or flashpack

HelenHywater · 16/07/2022 18:15

I've been with Intrepid too and really enjoyed it.

I did see a recommendation on here once which I meant to bookmark - but I didn't. Maybe they'll post on this thread....

Ive done two Intrepid trips - both a really nice mix of ages, sexes and definitely not all couples. There are basic, original and comfort options so you have different options within the same region as well. Would highly recommend them.

@Whataretheodds

I'm 53. Interested in a tour, visiting lots of places. Somewhere like Vietnam or Kerala or Jordan.

Up for doing most stuff, probably not super high adrenaline, but river trips, hiking, rainforest, etc. etc.

I travel alot for work and am quite comfortable in my own company, but would enjoy being around other solo travellers for parts of the trip.

Jordan is so easy, you definitely don't need a group tour unless you want one, it's small and possible to get from one end to the other reasonably by taxi. I can't recommend it highly enough! My advice would be give Amman a miss and stay in Madaba, which I really liked. I stayed at the Mariam hotel and they were brilliant, organised to take me all over the place and then down to Wadi Musa for Petra and then I went to Wadi Rum where I had already organised a stay with Jordan Tracks as part of a group and met some lovely people. Petra and Wadi Rum are not to be missed! Another great way to meet others but not be tied to them (which really puts me off group tours!!) is of course to stay in backpackers places for some or all of the trip. There is so much to see in Jordan, I swam in the dead sea, saw amazing Roman ruins, visited castles, it's just fantastic. Much shorter flight than Vietnam or Kerala if you go to Jordan as well.

Tours have the options of all the legwork and organisation done for you, by yourself you get more freedom. My top tips are before you book a group tour ask for how the group is made up e.g. all married/singles, age range, male female ratio etc and that gives you a feel for what you are letting yourself in for.

Some tour agencies like exodus also do solo weeks but you often find solo travellers on other trips as well.

Think about Costa Rica if you like wildlife etc. Jordan has stunning scenery though.

If you fancy Central Asia, I highly recommend Kalpak travel.

PeggyGa · 21/07/2022 21:26

They are all so expensive though

MrsHamlet · 21/07/2022 21:28

You're paying for the expertise and the on ground support though. I couldn't have done Turkmenistan on my own.... I paid for the convenience of having an expert make the arrangements and support me on a daily basis.

Elsiebear90 · 21/07/2022 21:33

Highly recommend Intrepid, used their sister company Trek America and it was absolutely incredible, best experience of my life.

MrsHamlet · 21/07/2022 21:56

I also recommend intrepid. I've been to South Africa and Alaska with them. My sister had also travelled with them a fair bit

sintrawest · 21/07/2022 22:01

Also recommend intrepid

Check out Flash Pack. www.flashpack.com

Trailfinders are travel agents who arrange all sorts of different holidays. You could try them. Describe what you are looking for, give them an idea of your budget and see what they suggest.
