Hello. We have a few nights to kill in northern Spain - travelling from Vigo to Santander in August. Any recommendations of great places to stay - hotels or self-catering considered - would be gratefully received. DC are 9 and 11. Thank you!

We stayed in a nice hotel that leads right on the beach in La pineda (salou) I'm not sure if that would be on your way , porta ventura theme Park is near by if you fancy taking the kids.

Thanks for your reply. This looks great, but sadly is in the wrong part of Spain.

Oh my geography Is clearly rubbish 😀

Gijon has quite a few beaches, both in the town (San Lorenzo) and nearby. It’s a buzzy place and there are a range of water sports to choose from. It’s close to Oviedo which is an an attractive city with a medieval part, some nice parks and Belle Époque apartments. I stayed there so don’t know about Gijon accommodation. Gijon is about 150 km from Santander.

Comillias and surrounds is absolutely lovely, tucked away, small, quiet, near the caves, plus Gaudi's house.

Or go inland to the Picos Europa, which are marvellous. Somewhere like Cangas de Onis, various adventure activities to do there.

Years ago we stayed in a Paradores in that area. Can’t remember what it was called but have a look at the website, there’s a lot in northern Spain i think.

Hondarrabia? San Sebastian?

gigglinggirl · 09/07/2022 20:52

@Mrsjayy Don't worry at all - I had to look at a map to know this! @DoggerelBank @Namechange7777 @bellac11 @midsomermurderess thanks everyone, I’ll get searching.

Oh sorry, just reread the OP - my suggestions are too far east

doistayordoigo · 10/07/2022 11:54

We stayed in Potes when we visited the Picos de Europa 20 or so years ago. Really nice little town in the mountains, and visited Fuente De and the beach town of Llanes from there.

bellac11 thanks to your recommendation we have just booked a few days near Comillias as part of a long tour from France down to the Extremadura and then to the south coast. Looks fab.

Im jealous, I was looking at places again after I posted that to you and I think I need to make some plans myself, and as you say to drive down through France.

I was going to revitalise this thread to see if anyone else had recommendations for the northern coast of Spain? Still floundering around for ideas for this summer

Peccary · 14/05/2023 20:05

We did a road trip San Sebastian>Llanes>Picos de Europa>Santiago de Compostela. While staying in Santiago we did some day trips into Galicia along the Atlantic coast and to Vigo. One of my most memorable holidays

tealgate · 17/05/2023 15:42

@GloriousD That looks amazing, thank you

GloriousD · 17/05/2023 17:41

@tealgate

We stayed at this hotel right on the beach - their website doesn’t do it justice.

Thanks for that. Looking at spending a few days in the Picos area as well, so beach then a bit of hills and hiking. We did a great trip to Northern Greece up near the Albanian border a few years ago and it looks like a similar vibe.
