Going to France in a couple of weeks and I can't wait! I bloody love French supermarkets but it's been so long since we've been (thanks covid) that I can't remember the cool little things that I should buy. Anyone got any recommendations?

Fig & walnut boursin

wonderstuff · 07/07/2022 23:29

Peach tea sirop! We’ve just run out after a half term visit. Next trip is on the train so really restricted on what we can bring back - didn’t think it through..

Happynow · 07/07/2022 23:30

OMG French supermarkets!!

Normandy144 · 07/07/2022 23:31

Belin pizza crackers
Bonne maman jam in lots of flavours (peach especially)
Apericubes

Happynow · 07/07/2022 23:35

French supermarkets are extraordinary. Compared to what we have in the UK.

Happynow · 07/07/2022 23:36

But go to supermarkets in Scandinavia ... v v disappointing.

LaChatte · 07/07/2022 23:36

It's funny reading you all getting so excited about French supermarkets, I'm the exact same when I come over to England 😂

Happynow · 07/07/2022 23:37

That's why they're all so slim over there!

TullyApplebottom · 07/07/2022 23:37

Lays cheeseburger flavour crisps.
I have sophisticated tastes.

twocatsandtwokids · 07/07/2022 23:38

Cornichons, Dijon mustard, soupe de tomates à la vermicelles, celeriac rémoulade, carottes râpées… we’re going in August and I am now starving!

twocatsandtwokids · 07/07/2022 23:39

Oh those cheese croustilles crisps too 😍

Cacolac the best ever chocolate milk…in small bottles which for some reason taste so much better. The children love them. Well mine are adult but they are still rather special!
This seasons garlic.
Tins of green lentils.
From the chiller cabinet sweet puff pastry in a circle….perfect for making Tarte Tatin. Get 10 and put them in the freezer when you get home.

MyGirlDaisy · 07/07/2022 23:41

You can bring dairy back to the uk - all that lovely cheese and big blocks of butter.

You can’t take dairy from the uk to france.

Cacolac ... possibly the best ever thing tasted by man!

Happynow · 07/07/2022 23:43

Anyone up for a smear of roquefort on a water biscuit?

AllLopsided · 07/07/2022 23:48

Teisseire sirops are the best.. the lemon is so tangy, plus pink grapefruit and passion fruit are both amazing. And grenadine, which reminds me of trips as a child! No sweeteners of course!
Second or third the fig & nut Boursin. Have a fancy for it now, will have to get some next week.
Poulin hot chocolate - cheap but really smooth and chocolatey.
Crème or confiture de marron which you can spread on toast or add to yoghurts/ice cream.
Melons, big juicy charentais melons!
Brioche...
I live in France and am usually hankering after British stuff (mostly gluten free cakes/biscuits) but we have a pretty good selection. I am sad that my chances of eating crumbly Wensleydale cheese again are pretty slim, thanks to Brexit. You can bring it in but you have to declare it, and DH is not keen on the inevitable wait...

Happynow · 07/07/2022 23:53

Beautiful post Lopsided. Never been a big fan of Wensleydale. So no such a loss x

Happynow · 07/07/2022 23:53

*not

I bring back Le Petit Marseillais 'cuisine' liquid soap for friends. It's lovely and soft on hands. Also jars of the mixed peppercorns. Palmier biscuits. Raclette cheese which is great in sandwiches as well as on the potatoes etc.

To eat there: Haagen Dazs Canteloupe Melon ice cream; absolutely addictive.

OrangeBlossom28 · 23/07/2022 16:56

We're now on holiday in the Lot and Garonne region. Whoever recommended the fig and nut Boursin is a genius. Oh my, it's lush!

AllLopsided · 24/07/2022 23:56

Belated thank you to @Happynow, don't think I've ever had a post described as beautiful before!

I like the Petit Marseillais savon de cuisine too... smells of oranges and holidays to me! Buy the refills and you will fit more in!

The Haagan Dazs melon ice cream is amazing (haven't seen it this year, but was only available in the Big Shop where I don't go very often).

That was me. You occasionally get it in the UK as part of a multipack at Xmas. Probably just as well it isn't available here as I could live on it.

OrangeBlossom28 · 25/07/2022 14:23

@Isthisreasonable I'm having it with some Schar gf salty crackers I found in the supermarket. Heavenly!

EspeciallyDeIighted · 25/07/2022 14:37

Just got back yesterday with sirops, rillettes, confit canard, escargots (all cans), several squeezy bottles of mustard mayo, some big inexpensive bottles of Eau de Cologne, some herb infusions in beautiful tins. While we were out there we ate masses of cheese and salamis so didn't bring any back, same for various crisps. We had mango sorbet cornettos over there which were lovely, think those were from Intermarché, but we also went to LeClerc and at least two Carrefours. Heavenly.

EspeciallyDeIighted · 25/07/2022 18:51

And I went to Sainsburys just now and found mango sorbet cornettos there too 😀
